I have read many of the posts relating to this and am getting more confused. Can we just start from square one for me???
    Thanks... :)

Recently downloaded Nscape 6.2 and it had big trouble trying to load java at my bid auctions. So I just downloaded 6.2.3
and now my browser freezes *every* time it encounters java. I have had to use IE, I do all my mail etc in Nscape. So want to stay with NS if possible.

I have downloaded every Sun program and have the same dll's in my Nscape plugins, Java stuff 1.3.1 and 1.3.1_02 and 1.4.0_01. YIKES!!! Help!

I have always upgraded instead of uninstalling. Now I need to uninstall and start over. But I need direction.

    1. I copied my user folder to another drive until after I have installed Nscape 7.0 to protect my mail.

    1. What about my address book? When I installed 6.2, it lost all my addresses and I have never found them. I took some old ones from communicator 4. 7. Some are just lost.
When I installed 6.2.3 over 6.2, the current address book was not adversely affected. How do I save my address book?

    2. How do I save my bookmarks?

    3. In the posts, I see things that I should do to Mozilla. What exactly do I do with Mozilla? And how?

    4. I read that I should delete Nscape 6 and the Mozilla Profiles Folder. Is that right?

    5. If I delete it and have to create a new profile, am I supposed to save the "old" profile folder before I uninstall? I am afraid to play with my Registry Keys. Is it safe for me to do that?

Gosh, to most of you, this isn't scary at all. But I am game to do it, if someone can walk me through it.

I will be eternally grateful if this works out. I am hoping this will cure the java problem....

    Thanks tons.

UP AND RUNNING. NOW NEED JAVA HELP

It's done. Uninstalled. 7.0 installed and it is *really* nice. It kept all my mail, folder, addys, bookmarks, etc. And it does load the Java.

However, one really big problem!!! When I move my curser around the page, text appears and disappears. I sell jewelry at auction, and at my live bids, the "bid button" disappears everytime someone bids on the item. That makes it impossible for me to post a bid. Not good!

The other thing that is really weird, is that the same thing now happens in IE. Must be a Windows program or something that I am missing. Do you think?

Any ideas????? Thanks for your help.

It might help if you post a link to a site that is giving you java problems. I don't have Netscape 6 (or 7) installed so I'm going by Mozilla 1.0rc3 which is similar. Hopefully someone that has Netscape 6 or 7 installed will see this and help out.

I couldn't tell from your post if you uninstalled the Sun Java JRE 1.3.1 version(versions?) before installing JRE 1.4.0 so that might be an issue. I would have uninstalled earlier Sun Java versions from Add/Remove Programs, rebooted, then installed the Sun Java 1.4.0 (assuming you need to install the JRE as a separate install with Netscape 7, as you do with Mozilla)

At this point, how many Java Runtime Environment (JRE) versions do you see in Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs?

    On your IE java problems
(You may want to repost this in the Internet Explorer forum):

What version of IE are you running? Are you using the Microsoft Java VM or Sun's Java? With recent IE versions look for either a Java (sun) or Microsoft VM setting in IE's Internet Options, Advanced tab, or open the (Sun) Java Plugin's Control Panel Applet and look on the Browser tab to see if IE is selected.

    See this thread for details:

Thanks Alice ... I resolved my IE problem by downloading Microsoft VM for my ME OS and checking to enable VM in IE's browser preferences. The Java works great over there. But I only use IE if I have no other choice. That is why I kept trying to get the java to work in NS.

I had previously deleted all JRE's from my hard drive before installing the latest pluggin. Without any java on my drive except for VM, I got the little NS icon that says "click here for pluggin." I went after that pluggin. It was jre140_01i.xpi. That loaded the java at the auction bidding site. However, it is as unstable as quicksilver. Moving the cursor causes text to disappear. Where text does not appear, moving the cursor will cause it to appear. And the "bid button" disappears everytime someone bids. Then it is not accessible to me.

I have given up on NS for bidding. Simply can't do it ... impossible. So I just go to IE for that.

I will go to the forum you suggested and post my "fix" for IE.

Again, thanks for your post. I wish there were some way to configure VM to NS like you can to IE.

    Hi again,

    Glad I could help.

I'm not sure, but didn't WinMe come with IE5.5 and the Microsoft Java VM already installed? Maybe it only needed to be enabled again, in the Advanced options, as explained in the link I gave to the other thread, if you had enabled Sun's Java in IE. Anyway, I'm glad you were able to resolve your IE problems by using Microsoft's Java VM.

Too bad Sun's Java is your only option in Netscape 6/7 (and Mozilla). Netscape Communicator (4.xx) uses it's own Java, by the way so that's another option, if you want to try it, BUT: I tried the auction site you gave on the IE forum in Netscape 4.79 and my resources dropped so low (into the red!) that I couldn't test the bidding page!

You're right about that auction page. I can bid using IE; however, after a long period of time, IE hangs up and I have to restart. But it's a necessary site for me. You've been a great help! I wasn't aware that NS couldn't use the Microsoft VM and spent tons of time trying to figure out how to get it to work.

Well, anyhow I'm through trying to be a techie until I run into the next problem. It's back to work for me.
