    Welcome to WindowsBBS StephanieLatasa :)

Please download the attachment smitfraud.zip. Save it to your desktop (you can save it to floppy and transfer to your computer). If it saves as attachment.php, right click and rename to smitfraud.zip You may need to enable viewing extensions for known file types to see the zip and php extensions. To do that, open My Computer and click Tools on the menu, then folder options. Click the view tab of the window that opens, uncheck the box to Hide extensions...... and click OK. Now right click the zip and extract the smitfraud folder to your desktop.

In safe mode, open the smitfraud folder and double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts. When the tool completes, scan again with HijackThis and place a check next the following entries if present.

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe

Open the control panel>add\remove programs and uninstall spywarebegone (it's on the list of rogue anti-spyware apps http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm), popupbegone, Security IGuard, Virtual Maid and Search Maid if present. Then delete their folders in C:\Program Files.
Open C:\WINNT\system32 and delete the folder Log Files if present.

Open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and click OK.

Reboot, hopefully into Windows, download and install both Spybot 1.3 and Ad-aware SE Personal 1.05 (both free) from the links in my signature. Allow Spybot to load SDHelper upon installation. Immediately check for updates to both programs. Run Spybot and fix everything it finds and prechecks (items in red). Run Ad-aware in the full scan mode, right click within the scan results and select all, then click next and allow removal. Reboot and do an online virus scan with RAV. If any files are infected, copy the results and post it here. Run another HijackThis scan and post the new log.

Got your PM. ;) The tool has been updated (several times today actually  ) due to new information about this infection. Please delete the one you currently have, re-download and run again. No need to boot to safe mode, but first close all other applications and windows, and when the tool completes, open My Computer, right click Local disk C: and choose properties, then disk cleanup. Check all boxes except compress old files and click OK. It may take a while to complete. When finished, reboot, then post a new HijackThis log.
