    Hey people.

I have been looking for this on the net for a while but I cannot find an answer to it.

I have a client I do some work for that has Win 98SE with a modem installed. The modem will not detect a dial tone. I turned off the option that says wait for a dial tone before dialing. Still did not work, it makes a sound as if the modem and port are already in use. I figured I would try to remove the device and let Win 98 install it again but when I try to do that, device manager locks up and it will not remove the device.

Are these two problems related? Is there anything that I can do to prevent this from happening again?

If it is the COM port, can I change the IRQ in the BIOS and let it use another COM port automatically?

    Thanks for the help!

Usually, Device Mgr may not allow removal of hardware or lock up if the hardware is being used. I'd say do a scan for trojans and dialer apps, the modem may actually be in use by some unwanted apps.
