I have a WD external hard drive. its about one and a half years old. after using it for about an hour, i exited my computer and wanted to access it again five minutes later.. but now my computer won't detect it at all. its not even detected at the usb port. the usb ports work because i tried inserting other hardware and it was all detected. how?:confused::confused:

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

There is a strong possibility that the drive or the drive controller in the external case has failed.

Have you tried another USB cable?

Have you tried it in another computer?

If it is the controller which has failed and the drive itself is OK your data should be recoverable.

Footnote - you should connect the drive to the computer before powering up the drive. And when removing the drive always use 'Safely Remove Hardware' - Safely Remove before powering the drive down.
