I cannot seem to find a free defrag software for my W2k OS.
I don't want O&O defrag 2000, it takes to long to defrag my 8 Gig drive, and Diskeeper is even worse. Anything without a spyware out there?
    Thank you for any help.

p.s Another thing, people say that the Microsoft defrag utility is inferior but I cannot even find it on my Win 2k. I checked start > programs > Accessories >System tools but defrag is not there. The only utilities available under system tools folder are "Backup" and "Character Map "; so where did Defrag go?

Win2k Defrag is supposed to be installed. Was this a WinNT / win2k upgrade that had Disk Keeper installed on it? If so, that is why you don't have Win2k defrag.

I have used Norton Speed Disk 5.0. It works wonders for some of my systems.

I do believe there is an article on here somewhere about installing the XP defragger in Win2k. I don't have the site here at work, maybe somebody else does.

The defragger that shipped with 2K is written by the Diskeeper folks and is basically a Diskeeper Lite Lite.

That probably accounts for the fact that an upgrade to NT4 where another Diskeeper app resides won't load the 2K built-in one.

    defrag util for Win 2k

I upgraded to Win 2k from Win 98.
I cannot seem to find a free Defrager for win 2k OS. I am quite aware of "Disk Lite" but the way the summarize at what it does lead me to believe that this program doesn't do a thorough job.
I tried running the defrag program but I got an error:

The instruction at "0x7800209a" referenced memory at "0x00000000â€. The memory could not be "readâ€.
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on Cancel to debug the program

Result from running the Degug program:

    Microsoft Visual C++
    Unhandled exception in mmc.exe (MSVCRT.DLL): 0xC0000005:Access Violation.

And the yellow arrow indicates this code that may be at fault:
    7800209A mov ax,word ptr [edx]

So, what do you think guys?

What service pack are you running?

Do you have M$ SQL server running when the error occurs?

If you have your file system set to NTFS it can tolerate a good bit of fragmentation without any performance problems. While the defrag utility included as part of 2K isn't the world's best, it does well enough to keep the OS happy and especially if NTFS.

    To SuperGeek Newt

The service pack installed is the latest one, I think it's #3 and I don't have an M$ SQL server.
When I first upgraded to Win 2k I was given about 8 to 10 CDs but not all of them were wanted by the setup program.
All I want to know is which of the remaining CDs I can find and re-install the defrag program that's supposed to be in one those CDs.
I don't want to buy a defrag software now since I intend to purchase a new PC next year.

For short-term use, my suggestion would be to download the newest version of Diskeeper Lite which should work for you.

If you have a copy already installed, remove it first.

I thought I'd find a way to force the version that ships with 2K to install but didn't have any luck with searching. The one at the link is newer anyway.

I use O&O to do a 40 gig drive and it is fast. just as fast as the defrag
in Windows. Do it over nigh or when you are not using the computer because
frankly the others are not faster. You
may have deleted you defrag. O&O offers
to do this. To get it back again use you
windows disk and go to control and
go to the add remove windows
components and check tools to reestablish.

I get the same error message. How do you re-install the MS defrag program, you say go to add/remove etc... I am using XP Pro and I don't see a option for tools.
    Thanks.

Is there a Scandisk for W2K?

If yes, where do I find it. It's not in the Accessories/System Tools.

    I use 'O&O Defrag 2000 freeware'.
It works great and is more efficient than Speed Disk of the defrag that comes with Win2000 pro.
This program is available in many software sites.
