I am haveing trouble installing netscape 7, it stops on install and gives me an error message .1009 i choose custom install and choose not to put the aol mail and messenger in. I read it MUST be install on the message board custom install. I would like to use eudora instead that is why. Both these programs are new to me and this is my first time with either. I have downloaded it twice did a complete reinstall after cleaning up the first two tries edited the registy of entries and tried again still no good. what gives

Not having much luck so far and support on netscapes site is ...... (hate to say it no better than ms) If they want people to look for an alternative they should provide better assistance or theres no chance against the big dog!!

    Welcome to the Forum, hankf!

    Hi hankf,

Both MS and NS are looking into a problem with ZLIB.DLL, a common file that can cause the XPCOM error.

Do a "Find" (Start|Find|Files or Folders) for the file. If found, rename to ZLIB_DLL.BAD. Try installing NS again.

You can find a Netscape 7.0 "Standalone" Version of Netscape, (without Mail & Newsgroups) on the SillyDog701 Browser Archive web site. The good news is: that It is a mere 10.2 MB download.

Please post back if you have more questions,

    Ramona :D

would i be getting this ZLIB.DLL error because i chose not to install the hp printer part of the program and if i rename this file will my printer still function properly?

thanx and i was considering the sillydog streamlined version but i am new to netscape and researching linux sometimes you must be weary of altered programs but i did check it out before this adventure

If i install the news and mail/ messenger does that mean i will have to set up a maiil account with aol or can i still use eudora

    Hi hankf,
One has absolutely nothing to do with the other, so rest easy. :)

The HP Printer Identifier Plugin provides extra links to Netscape's print center for extra printing hints or support. Not really needed.
    I certainly understand your caution.

    Hi hankf,

Leave the file as you renamed it: ZLIB_DLL.BAD.

    Hi hankf,

Try this solution and see if it helps. I happened onto this one on a Google Search:

"Failed to install XPCOM, error 1009 ". ***

    Solved!

I had been trying to install the program as a personalised user (under Family Logon). After I logged out, and pressed Esc when the login dialog box appears, thus logging in as "any user ", I could install it just fine.

Not being familiar with ME or XP, if this doesn't apply to you, then just ignore. This error also occurs on Windows 98, so it is not XP specific.

well its been over a week i messed up my printer managed to use up most my internet time downloading net 7 and net7.01 and mozilla avoided my family for a week, and still cant get past the elusive xpcom dll. error netscape stoped providing trouble shoot advice the forum ran out or stoped responding. i have been everywhere looking for an answer and decided it is not up to me to fix this error if netscape wants to get a foot in the door they must fix this ploblem. Or the masses will bury it under ie6. Simplicity is the key if anaverage user cant past the install then they have no chance of people using it. sorry but have no choice but to use ie6 but i have downloaded opera 6.05 and think i may try this route for now. any other suggestions. before i jump of the netbus.

    :confused

    Hi hankf,

I'm still trying to come up with something for you on this error. After reading the posts again, I noted that you asked if you could use Eudora with Netscape, and the answer is yes, you can use Eudora. But, as you noted, the Netscape Mail & Newsgroups is a mandatory component.
