    I'm working on another friend's PC that I believe has some parasites on it that I can't seem to get rid of. It's a Win98SE box, I have run SpyBot and Adaware (in safe mode) and let them clean up what they found. I ran CWShredder and it did not find anything. I have also run his Mcafee virus scan and found no viruses. The machine is having the following problems;

    1. During boot after the desktop is loaded it gets a fatal exception error 0E, when you press enter it continues loading as if nothing happened.

    2. Once the machine is completely up, after about 2 or 3 minutes of sitting idle a windows explorer window opens up. It can be closed with no apparent problem.

    3. After sitting idle for about 10 minutes the machine just freezes up. The mouse is functional as is the keyboard, but no programs can be started. It cannot even be shutdown without a power off.

I found some programs listed in the startup tab under msconfig that look like they don't belong, with names like Ecjp.exe, 5a.exe, ufql.exe. I have a feeling these may be causing the problems. I am including a HJT log in the post in hopes that someone can identify what might be in need of cleaning up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing to do is uninstall Wintools and reboot, don't worry if it doesn't do anything.
Then remove these items with HJT.

The green items are optional, they are resource hogs.
Then Restart in Dos Mode, and do these commands, pressing Enter at the end of each line:
    smartdrv
    deltree c:\windows\temp
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1
    deltree C:\WINDOWS\wmtehegj.exe
    deltree C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\kgqewrlz.exe
    deltree C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Ufq1.exe
    deltree c:\progra~1\common~1\wintools
    deltree C:\PROGRA~1\TOOLBAR
    ren C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wuw.exe wuw.old

Type a Y that you want to delete, check for typos at this time.
These commands will delete those files. I suggest renaming wuw.exe above as I am not sure if that is needed by a legitmate program, per this link
Reboot and then Find the file Winmain.Exe and delete it. Surf a bit, and then post a new log.

    Hi Markp62,

Glad to have your assistance once again. I'll do the things you recommended and post back with the results and a new HJT log. I'm unable to surf on this PC as my friend uses cable internet and I have the PC at my house. I can at least see if it will run without freezing and the blue screen.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Bill

    Markp62,

I followed your instructions, deleting all in the HJT log that you suggested except the qttask and the realplayer one. I didn't know if he would want those deleted. I did the DOS commands as well and rebooted. I could not find the Winmain.exe file on the reboot.

I am still getting the fatal exception error on boot, it seems to be happening right before the Mcafee splash screen appears, may have something to do with the virus program. I am also still seeing the windows explorer window pop-up after a few minutes of idle operation. After a few more minutes the PC still locks up. The mouse works as does the keyboard but nothing will start and doing ctrl_alt_del will bring up the task manager window but clicking on shutdown does nothing.

Here is the new HJT log for you to browse. Thanks again for your help.

    Bill

In addition to getting rid of the baddies shown in your HJT logs, the system will benefit from a good cleaning. Also nice if you can post the entire fatal exception error.

    General clean-up instructions for Win95/98/ME
    • Open a browser window and dump all TIF (temporary internet files) and cookies. Close.
    • Open windows explorer and
.. delete the contents of all temp folders
.. delete any files in c:\ with a name filennnn.chk (where nnnn is any number so file0001.chk, file1034.chk, etc)
    • verify that you have fewer than 500 files & folders directly under c:\. If you are close to that number, remove or move some files.
    • empty the recycle bin
    • boot to DOS
    • from the command prompt do the following
.. scanreg /fix <ENTER> (press the ENTER key)
      .. scanreg /opt <ENTER>
****note that 95 does not have scanreg.exe but a copy from 98 or ME will run fine if you can get one
      .. scandisk c:\ /nosave /autofix /surface <ENTER>
.. Win /D:M (forces a safe mode windows start)
    • Run another scandisk (start~programs~accessories~system tools) and check for a standard scan and to fix all errors found. The DOS scan couldn't check for long file name issues.
    • Run a defrag
    • Reboot to normal Windows.

If I understand correctly you can not get that machine onto the Internet.

So. If that is true then my first ( and only ) suggestion ( right now ) is to get rid of Mcafee.

I am guessing that the problem may be due to a conflict between something in the boot sequence and/or McAfee.

I believe I missed one, sorry about that.

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [NVSvc] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\nvsvc.exe -runservice

Remove with HJT, reboot and delete that file.
This one seems to be a worm, at least it fits some of the description here. If you can get online, go to the Quicklinks page below, and do a visit to one of the online virus scans.

You may need to uninstall MacAffee, reboot and then install it again. I believe it is corrupt, and causing the fatal exception at bootup.

I believe that you should delete the RB00x.cab files in the C:\Windows\Sysbckup folder as you go along. What is not there Windows can not use.

Delete them and restart Windows and it will make a new one as long as SCANREGW is loading at boot up. Windows itself will only make one per day unless you do delete them.

And as you get things cleaned up repeat these steps occasionaly.

    Newt,

    I followed your clean-up instructions. There were only 73 entries in the root including files and folders. The fatal exception error is as follows;

Fatal exception error 0E 0028:EF6FF000, the current application will be terminated.

Hitting enter at this point allows it to continue booting to the desktop.

    BillyBob,

I followed your suggestion about the cab files and about uninstalling Mcafee.

    Markp62,

I deleted the entry in the HJT and then deleted the file after reboot.

I appreciate the replies and the help guys. I am still seeing the exception error during boot even with Mcafee out of the picture. I still see the windows explorer window after a few minutes and the machine still locks up after a few more. I am including a new HJT log in case it will help. I am going to try disabling things one at a time in startup to see if I can determine what's causing the exception error, and with any luck it will be the lock-up culprit as well.

I haven't looked carefully thru the HJT log (better eyes than mine on here) but it looks like you did remove your AV (good, it was not working properly) but didn't reinstall it so you aren't protected.

If so, that isn't good and you need to reinstall the AV app and update it immediately.

Sometimes McAffee does bad job at uninstalling itself, leaves some files and entries there. The below entry is a good example, I believe this should have been under the RunOnce key.
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\2004816203248_MCINFO.EXE /insfin
The below link has the file names that may need to be removed, and a small download that takes out the registry entries.

    Newt,

I'll probably not put Mcafee back on this PC, I told him about AVG and he wants to use it. I will be sure to put it on before he goes back online.

    Markp62,

I have removed all references to Mcafee that I could find, folders and files and registry entries. I used their registry cleaner tool in the link you provided and did some manual cleaning of my own.

The problems still persist. One thing I did notice, I started the system monitor to see how busy the cpu was. Sitting at the desktop with nothing running but the monitor it is a solid 100% busy.

It is hard to do any diagnostics in normal mode as the PC locks up so quickly. I'm not crazy about pushing the reset button or powering off and back on a lot, I don't think that is good for the hard drive.

I haven't had a chance to do any startup trouble shooting yet, hopefully today or tomorrow. It's obvious that something is running away with the machine, but I haven't figured out what yet.

I would first recommend you uninstall Viewpoint media player from the add/remove programs menu. It is installed along with AIM and is almost considered spyware.

Then scan again with HJT and place a check next to the following entries. Close all other windows and click fix checked. The entries in green are either resource hogs, dial home programs and/or just not needed at startup.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINDVDPatch] CTHELPER.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Jet Detection] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy\PROGRAM\ADGJDet.exe "
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTStartup] C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\SPLASH SCREEN\CTEaxSpl.EXE /run
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe "

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\2004816203248_MCINFO.EXE /insfin
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TaskTray] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy\TaskBar\CTLTray.exe "
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TaskBar] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy\TaskBar\CTLTask.exe "
    O4 - Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

    O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
    O4 - Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe
    O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

Go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the General tab click the advanced button. Check the box to 'enable start menu' and OK out. Restart and choose safe mode.

Search the drive for and delete all instances of the following files and folder.

    powerreg scheduler.exe
    powerreg schedulerv2.exe
    powerregschedulerv3.exe
    powerreg
    <<<<<Program Files folder

Open C:\Program Files and delete the folder Viewpoint.
Open C:\Temp (if present), select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Temp, select all and delete.
Open C:\Windows\Applog, select all and delete.
Open My Computer and right click Local Disk C:, then choose disk cleanup. Check all except compress old files and OK.
Uncheck the box to 'enable start menu' in msconfig and OK out. Reboot.

Back in Windows, download the newest version of HijackThis.exe (1.98.2) from here, overwriting the one you have. Run another HijackThis scan and post the log.

    Progress!

Hi Dave, good to hear from you again.

    I'm making progress. By doing the startup trouble shooting I was able to determine the cause of the fatal exception errors and the system freeze. It was these two tasks being loaded at startup;

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TaskTray] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy\TaskBar\CTLTray.exe "
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TaskBar] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBAudigy\TaskBar\CTLTask.exe "

Dave, I followed your recommendations and removed the items you listed in the HJT log, which removed the offending tasks causing the fatal errors and system freeze. I was reluctant to remove the Qttask and realplayer until I had talked with the PC's owner, but he said to do whatever I felt was necessary to get it running well again so I removed them as well.

I checked for the powerreg programs and did not find any, nor was the folder present. I did the cleanups and removed Viewpoint as well. The only problem remaining is the windows explorer pop-up a few minutes after boot. It can be closed with no apparent problems, but it still needs to be removed. I am posting the new HJT log run with the new version. Hopefully something in this will be the cause of the pop-up and it can be removed.

This one isn't doing much of anything. It probably used to read read something like

Another entry that was pointing at a piece of McAfee. Both of the 016 items are just leftover trash from removing McAfee so get rid of them.

About this Explorer window opening on startup, and this is a reach but has caused this problem in 98. Look in the windows folder for the file 'welcome.htm ", then delete it so it goes into the Recycle Bin. Reboot to test.

    Newt,

I deleted the entries that you recommended in HJT.

    Markp62,

There wasn't a file called 'welcome.htm' in the Windows folder. I hadn't heard of that causing a this type problem before, but it was worth a shot.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

With all the cleanup that has been done, the PC definitely boots up a lot faster. Now if I can just get rid of this pop-up I'll have it made.

Lets see if a startup log reveals any clues. Open HijackThis and click the config button, then misc tools. Check the boxes for minor and empty sections and then generate log button. Copy/paste the results here.

    Dave,

My friend called me last night and said he needed his PC back so I returned it to him, with the understanding that the explorer pop-up was still there. He said he could live with that for now. I'll email him with your instructions and have him generate the startup list and save and email it to me. I'll post it when I get the reply from him. I know he said he could live with it but to me the job is not finished and I would like to see this through until resolved. Of course, if he says he'd rather not then there's not much more that I could do. Will let you know one way or the other.

    Thanks,

    Bill

    Dave,

Here is the startup list from HJT, it's rather long so I had to break it up into two posts. Sorry it took so long to post this but he just sent it to me.

    Thanks again for the help,

    Bill
