I recently got this camera and it came with HD Writer AE software that seems a throwback to the days of Windows 3.1. It is just too unintuitive and too restrictive.

The camcorder seems to produce files in MTS format.

I don't have any current plans to do high-end or complicated editing. I would just like to do deletions of certain parts of the video and maybe join two or more videos together.

I have Nero 9 full version; but, either I don't know how to use it or Nero 9 doesn't work with MTS files. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

That cam records video in MPEG AVC/H.264 format.

Nero 9 can handle them, but afaik cannot handle the audio when burning MTS to dvd format.

To best edit the file in Nero, open it in Vision > select Export Video to File, > select mpeg-2 as the destination format.

Avidemux is a real good opensource (free) video editor and it can handle all aspects of H264 files. H264 Tutorial
