I'm trying to get AutoSpell to work with my XP Home's Wordpad. Their Help is worthless for me a newbe, lots of errors.

I'd like to know if someone has gotten it to work. The AutoSpell icon, a checkmark, is supposed to be sitting on Wordpad's menu bar but it's not.

    Thanks, Kerry

Is the product supposed to wprk with WordPad? Or just Word? It's not too clear from their site.

It will work in WordPad and NotePad, but it has to be activated independently before starting either WordPad or NotePad, (a shortcut in your StartUp folder will do). Once activated, WordPad and/or NotePad will display an 'AutoSpell' item in it's Menu Bar, and also an Icon in the System Tray. HTH

Unfortunately it does not work in WinXP, as the WordPad and NotePad versions are not recognized.

Thanks. That answers it, AutoSpell not working with XP. Too bad.

What I'm looking for is a small app such as Wordpad to replace our Word97 which didn't make the switch from Win98 undamaged. It will open, and I can use it, but when I open or close it I get, "The Visual Basic environment could not be initialized. Run setup to install it. "

I've dragged everything I know of from our XXCOPY of our old C:\, it's now located on D:\, but have been unsuccessful at being able to install it Word97 correctly—it came bundled on our Compaq with no manual or CD or Product Key.

We're a nonprofit so funds are tight.

My idea was to compose BB posts on the fast loading Wordpad and use AutoSpell to spell check them and then copy-paste them.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank, Kerry

First re-name the existing WinXP files Notepad(x).exe and Wordpad(x).exe. Now copy and paste your Win98, Notepad.exe to C:\WINNT, and Wordpad.exe to C:\Program Files\WINNT\system32. This configuration works for me, but be prepared for a protest by WinXP and a demand for your install CD. Ignore the demands and have fun!

Also, if your original Word97 was installed from the Office97 CD, then try it again. It should work. ;)

    Thanks Luga:

What will happen when I rename them and then import the Win98 versions into XP Home? I never used those when I had Win98, do they have spell checkers or what?

Perhaps you are saying that the AutoSpell will install in those versions. Yes?

Re: Word97 "—it came bundled on our Compaq with no manual or CD or Product Key." No Office CD either.

    Thanks,

    Kerry

AutoSpell will work with the *imported* Win98 files. :) The reason for re-naming the originals is just in case you change your mind later. ;)

Can't help you with your Word97 other than to say that it needs to be installed to work. :)

    Hi luga:

I followed your instructions, a bit tricky because the minute I change notepad to notepadorig it brought up a new notepad.exe. So I dragged it to the desktop and inserted the Win98 version.

I did this also for wordpad then restarted but neither would show the AutoSpell icon in the menu bar.

    Now I'm testing http://www.microspell.com/index.html
It's a bit confusing at first but it will check these posts. I Select All, copy it to the clipboard and then click the MicroSpell icon in the System tools and it opens a blank window which looks a bit like wordpad. I then click paste and it presents all the suspect words and suggestions etc. Pretty cool.

I have a cool one that sits on my Mac's desktop. I just click the icon and it highlights and checks whatever app I'm typing in. And, it was free. :=)

    Thanks for your support,

    Kerry

AutoSpell does not place an Icon in either Notepad or Wordpad, just a Menu Item named [AutoSpell]. It does however place it's Icon in the System Tray [beside the Clock] when enabled. :)

    aaagh!

Oh well, I'm working on learning this MicroSpell because it can work for these posts here though it's a bit clunky.

    Thanks,

    Kerry
