One and one only. Although you may install more than one antivirus only one must be active otherwise there will be conflicts.

    Recommendations for anivirus software ....

    Avast
    Avira
    Microsoft Security Essentials
    AVG

For antimalware specific software - Malwarebytes (freeware version) - scan weekly.

These are all freeware and more than capable of protecting your computer - no av is 100% due to the vast number of malware items let loose every day - ~70,000.

The important factor is the frequency of updating the definitions.

    FWIW ...

On my main desktop I use Sunbelt Vipre - a pay for av, antimalware, firewall suite.

On my other computers I use either Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials

For second line of defense, try using "Cloud Antiviruses" which are being introduced by different companies under different names.

I use Avira as my primary antivirus & also have Immunet Protect installed. So far no problems & the speed is good. Both of them have detected & stopped a few nasty surprises independently.

I also use Spyware Blaster and WinPatrol. As well as Spybot S+D. And here is a link to a good comparison of AV software. http://www.av-comparatives.org/
