    hi
well first a friend of mine would like to know, her pc keeps shutting down for no reason usually when she tries to read her emails, no error message comes up its just shuts down with no warning, she leaves her pc on all the tome could this be anything to do with it?

    now for mine .

first i think i may have picked up a blaster worm?! is it.... sometimes a message comes up on screen and says sytem error system will shut down in 60 seconds any ideas on how i can get rid of it? my laptops only 5 months old... this message hasnt come up for a while but id like to be sure thats all..... i do have norton anti virus but when i installed it these pop ups kept soming up every 5 seconds (very annoying) how do i stop these?

second how do i remove things from my add and remove list when it keeps coming up <cannot open install.log>

and ive noticed all ofb a sudden there is about 25 of <windows hotpix> each with a different number by the side...... in my add and remove list now i have no idea where they came from? and can i get rid of them as they are not taking up space on my laptop..

is there any other way than defragmenting disks and disk clean up to make my laptop faster?
how do i know if all the things ice deleted have really gone from my laptop?

ok a lot of questions i know :p but any help will be extremly useful

    thanks :D

oh yeah one other thing ive just rememberd that whenever i start my laptop up after windows has loaded i keep getting pop up messages saying appliction has an error do i want to send a report how do i stop this, its not just application sometimes its a few others too like mmsb is it?!?!?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS! :)

Well, lets start with just a few of the things you mention.

Blaster worm. It runs in the task manager as msblast.exe. If there, end process on it and see here for removal.

Windows hotfix or hotpix in add/remove? If hotfix, those are patches applied by Windows Update and should be left alone.
Which programs are giving message, <cannot open install.log>?

See Black Vipers Site for a good guide to shutting down services that you don't need running. Takes some time to get through, but well worth the effort. If you have questions, do post back. To clean out Temps., TIFs and other junk, go to Start>run and type cleanmgr /sagerun:1 and hit enter. In the opening box, check everything except compress old files and OK. Then back to start>run and type cleanmgr /sagerun:1 and hit enter. Disk cleanup will start. If you don't have already, download and install Spybot and Ad-aware. Links in my signature. Immediately update them and run, deleting all they find. Once familiar with what they find and identifying each object as safe to remove, see here for max configuration settings. They should probably be run weekly. I do hope you are running an AV program and keep it up-to-date. A firewall should be in place on your PC as well, even if only XP's built in one.

The things you delete from your system are seen as free space, and available be written over with new information. It's not really gone till written over. Thats how it's possible to sometimes recover deleted files, and how they (gov't) are able to see what people do on their comps. even though it may have been deleted. Hope that answers your question.

This may be all you need to get your comp running the way you want, and your friend too. If not, it's a good start. :)

Answer to question #2 to remove programs from Add/Remove programs list. If you're comfortable working with the registry here's how. Start/Run(in the box type in regedit) click OK. H_KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall. Scroll down the list right click the programs that you want to remove click on delete OK. Exit the registry. Some deletions may require you to restart your machine. Hope this helps.

Removing entries from the registry will remove the entry for said program from the add/remove list, but it will not uninstall the program. It will leave you with installed programs with no reference to removing them, and possibly not functional.

one is a internet thing called tisaclli and the other is from when i put a cd in to watch the video on it now i cant get it from my add/remove list.

i do have anti-norton on my laptop but any ideas on how to stop these pop-ups that keep coming every 5 seconds!?

lol cos they are really annoying and i cant seem to work out how to stop them

i dont know for definate it is a blaster worm but read one of the old posts here that sounded pertty much the same as what i was getting but just wante to make sure, but i will try what you have given me noahdfear and hopefully it works..

does leaving your pc on all the time affect it at all?

the hotfix things arent taking up any space so ill leave them where they are.

oh yeah sorry bout the description didnt know what to put

just really wanted to sort my laptop out and get rid of all junk that seems to be on here now lol

Tiscali appears to be an internet provider in this area. Yours? If not, is it in the Start>all programs list? Is there an uninstall option there? Look for files/folders pertaining to that, especially an uninstall or unwise file within named folder. If no folder found, or files related, remove the entry as instructed by lj50. Same goes for video leftover. If folders files are found, but no uninstall, delete, then remove the entry.

Wouldn't hurt you to do some online virus scans either. Should have mentioned that before I guess. :)

I'm not very tech-minded but I'll jump in here on this one since no one else has that I see.

To stop receiving the message that asks if you want to send a report to microsoft, go to your run command (Start button, Run). Type in "services.msc" (leave off the quotes). It'll take you to a list of services. Go down to "Error Reporting Service" and to the left, click Stop the service.

    Debbie

Sorry. It's leaving out those little things that get us all in trouble. When you find Error Reporting Services make sure you click on it to highlight it. Then go to the left to stop the service.

I had that same message cannotopeninstall.log. Going into the reg was the only way I found to remove the program giving me that message. But I haven't tried what is posted here and I will certainly do so in the future. Now if I could find a good typing course I'll be all set.
