Need a better chat software

    I started chatting on the net, some sites require Java to be there so I installed Sun's Java Script version 1.4 but I find this software a little stubborn, I can't even kill it using the Task Mgr when I am done chatting; it even hung the pc sometimes.
    Is there a better software for chatting? Also I find the Sun's Java 1.4 a little too ancient.

    Thank u noahdfear, but i cannot find what I am lookling for. The help I got from google is mostly for websites while the others are commercial stuff.
