I see there are a lot of free usb disk ejectors to download that are much easier to use than the existing windows cumbersome one where you have to use multiple clicks on the small taskbar icon before safely removing a usb external drive.

Can someone recommend one that works on both XP and Win7?

Hi robls99, As many do - just pull it out! Seriously, MS want you to make sure you have CLOSED ALL on the USB so that you may not lose anything.
Apparently there are many thoughts on the subject and this Topic has been thrashed out before. A large number of members have never used the ejection setup and have just disconnected without loss of Data on a thumb drive.
I must admit I have done this many times myself without any losses.
Just make sure you close the programs/data first. Neil.

See if this would meet your need:

    USB Disk Ejector

You can also go to My Computer, right click the drive and choose Eject

In Windows 7 (and 8), there is usually no need to "eject" a device. Read this Microsoft article: Safely remove devices from your computer

retiredlearner hit the nail on the head. When I think that it is finished or says it is finished, I pull it out and don't look back. Ain't had a problem since. I am not the only one that does this. I always COPY and never MOVE. Copy leaves it on your PC also. Move doesn't. If something happens between point A and point B, which one do you think will leave you a winner!!!

PS: Does this apply to XP also?

Like MrBill, I have also just pulled the thumb drive when communication had finished on XP with out problem. This was during my earlier days learning my way around computers when I was naive about what you should and should not do when using a computer.
I play safe these days ;) Neil.

I pull mine out on XP and Windows 7, too, after the activity light stops blinking, but my newer PNY 16GB drive has no such light. :(
