    Hi All,

A friend is having problems with her computer's modem speed. She is on dialup using a new Conexant V.92 modem, but her connection speed is only 28k. She was having the same problem with the old V.90 modem, so that was the reason for the upgrade.

She has tried to speed up the modem, and has even plugged the phone line going to the computer into the modular jack on the junction box outside the house, but none of these ideas helped.

Could her problem be the computer itself ?..........She is running W98se.

Her brother has the same local ISP, but his speed is closer to 56k.

I think she even tried a different phone # supplied by the ISP.

I suspect the problem lies in the 'quality' of the line between her house and the telephone exchange. Here in the UK I have noted differing connection speeds on dial up using the laptop around the country. Even in my 'village' - not really, but that's what the locals insist on calling it :) -on dialup I get 42 - 48 at home, but at a friends a quarter of a mile away dialup is always over 50. Speed will also depend on the load on the interconnecting lines from the local exchange to the next exchange in the line to the ISP.

I suggest your friend speaks to the telephone company.

    Many thanks for the replys!

PeteC, is it possible for the telephone company to remedy this situation? The lines inside the house are not that old from what I hear. Can a person be too far away from the telephone substation in order to get a decent connection speed?

If it's a bad or overloaded line I guess so - well worth a call to find out, but I like Sparrow's idea which would sort out whether it's the line or the PC.

    Followup,

My friend's brother brought his computer over to her house and connected it to the phone line, and got the same speed results.

Seems that the (Underground) phone line was cut into during a pool installation a while back, and I would bet that's where the problem might be.

    Thanks for the update.
A strong possibility - a botched repair, maybe,
