Laptop with windows xp on it. I keep getting an error message saying "Ndetect has generated errors and will be closed "

The only way to get rid of it even for a few minutes is to reboot, the only way to do this is to hold the power button till it shuts down. Can access most all programs, but can't get into task manager to find what program is dead and just shut it down.

Sorry I don't have the specs on the laptop, it isn't my computer and the person that has it doesn't have access to the internet and doesn't know the specs.

any ideas would be greatly apprciated.

    Thanks in advance.

It does not appear that "ndetect" is a Windows program. There is an "ndetect" that installs with ICQ messenger (probably the "NetDetect" that appears in the startup menu that I have since removed) and another that is part of LiveUpdate for Symantec.

Do these ring a bell or is the search still on?

Could we be talking about NTDetect.com? That is a required system file.

If it is missing or badly damaged, no boot so that can't be your case. And since the thing is used to detect hardware at boot time, I'm honestly not sure if it does anything at all after the OS is loaded.

One thing to try is a look at the event logs for the time the error occured. They will often have additional information that will either lead you to a solution or allow enough information for someone here to give you one.

Is a part of Norton System works!

Search for ndetect*.* if it finds more than 1, the one you are refering to should be in the c:\Program files\norton...........

Do not tamper with the ndetect.com referenced by Newt.
