    I've got an oddball problem:

Navigator 7.0 has, in my experience, always been shifty about dumping its history (and "new" bookmarks) when it crashes, but I've recently been hit by it clearing the history even under normal operating circumstances.

I closed one browser session about thirty minutes ago and shut down my computer, and then got to where I was going and started things back up. Much to my surprise, my history's gone! This isn't so much of a problem right now as it is an annoyance, but it's awfully peculiar.

    Please advise.

Ditto; But *I* Lost ALL Bookmarks (7.02)

    Fenris & All ~

Not so sure about this NS 7.02 thing...

I too was browsing along when things *slowed* down - taking Forever to even read and then discard a five word e-mail.

Found an open 7.02 Browser Window that was hung up...
Cntl+Alt+Del said it was "Not Responding "...
Did an "End Task" and ALL open windows and e-mail window closed (looked like a "normal" End Task shutdown to me).

Re-opened NS 7.02 and it fired up in a reasonable time; e-mail first, then my Home Browser page.
Went to "click" on a site in my Personal Toolbar (next to the Bookmarks clicker)...
And Whoa! - NO Toolbar Page Links There!

Just *blank* space to the right of "Bookmarks "
    Clicked on "Bookmarks "...
NO Bookmarks - got a (never seen before) dropdown box [Bookmark this page], [File bookmark], and [Manage Bookmarks]...

Looked at [Manage Bookmarks] = Nothing to *manage* - opens up a full page with NO bookmarks showing on it...

Uhhhhh.... So where'd my hundreds of Bookmarks *vanish* to!??????

Luckily - good ole NS 4.79 is alive and well - with my complete Bookmark Collection seemingly intact....

But what's with NS 7.02 *Loosing* them?

And while we're askin - Anybody else found 7.02 Slower than a SLUG??

MUCH better at loading a full web page on the First Try (don't have to reload multiple times to get the whole page), but it takes as much as a minute or two to DO it! And just "trashing" a read e-mail can take a minute! LOTS of *grinding* and *churning* on the Hard Drive to do the simplest of tasks. NS 4.79 seemed able to do multiple tasks with a lot less Hard Drive activity!

    Well, any ideas?
We've now got a Vanishing History AND a Vanishing Bookmarks to solve!

    Hi Fenris,

What are your settings for History? Look in Edit|Preferences|Navigator|History

    Let us know...

    Ramona:

Remember for 10 days is the setting.

Keep in mind that this is Navigator 7.0 by itself; I never went for .01 or .02, 'cause I still remember the bad old days of my upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0 and the like; I was operating on the "If it ain't broke..." principle. Of course, there seems to be something broken, but that's neither here nor there.

    Thanks!

    Netscape 7.02 losing things

I'm glad to hear someone else is losing things in Netscape 7.0. I am my aunt's support person and she is continually losing her Email folders. (Windows ME O/S) All is not truly lost as I can usually discover the folders under a now defunct profile. I copy them over to the new folder (works great) and she is back in business for about 3 weeks. I wasn't terribly worried, thought it was something she was doing, when I lost my bookmarks the other day. (I'm on a Windows 2K O/S) Once again I was able to undelete them and recovered my bookmarks. I suspect the history or the compact processes are the culprits, but I can't be certain. If anyone has ideas, let me know! Please!

    thanks :-\

    Welcome to the Forum,

    Hi qtrolazyg,

If I had a solid fix for either problem I would be "Sainted "! ;) If you or your Aunt are using a Theme other than Modern, then change your Theme back to the Modern.

Disable "Empty Trash on Exit ". This setting can be found in:
    Edit|Mail & Newsgroups|Account Settings|Server Settings

The localstore.rdf and prefs.js files in your Netscape profile folder control what you see when you open the program. Those two files, and the registry.dat file, in your Mozilla folder, are rewritten when the program is closed correctly. Crashes can cause corruption of these files.

If you're sharing a Profile with Mozilla, don't, this too can cause unpredictable results.

Best advice is to backup your Profiles folder frequently.

    Hi Ramona,

We don't share a profile, or empty trash on exit, or use themes. It's pretty vanilla as far as set ups go.

I need to figure an easy way to back up and restore for my not-too-at-ease-with-a-computer aunt, though.

I'll let you know if I find a correlation with the history settings or the compact folders option. I usually get called after 4 or 5 attempts were made to set up new profiles.

    thanks for the tips :)

    Hi qtrolazyg,

Have you Aunt create a folder called "Backup ", or whatever she would like. Then a simple copy and paste of the Profiles folder...

Post back with whatever you find. If you do a Bug Search on either Address Book or Bookmarks, you will see that issues are being addressed, but not yet fixed:
