A few weeks ago, NAV picked up the adware threat Winfavorites with the file bridge.inf. It could not delete the file. The path listed is C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files\bridge.inf

I cannot find that file. I used search and searched hidden and system files. I went through the downloaded program files manually and I still can't find it. I found and copied instructions for removing Winfavorites, but I can't find a sign of it.

About the same time this file showed up in NAV, I started having shutdown problems with XP AGAIN. I had the problem when I first got my computer, but it eventually fixed itself. Now it's back. I tried unchecking the "reboot" in event of system failure, but still have the problem. I am wondering if the two problems are related.

When I was checking the Downloaded Program Files I found the damaged file .IUCTL.dll. - It's under a long string of numbers (a windows update file?) I read that it can cause problems with Windows Update, but I don't seem to have a problem with Windows Update.

Are all those files in the Downloaded Program Files suppose to remain there? When I look under Dependency the files show the path of the Downloaded Program Files. It seems they should remain there.

I think i ended up with more than one question. I suppose I need to try to figure out the bridge.info file problem first.

    I have a bridge.dll file, but it is under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intel Shared\H32X.

    Thanks,
    nz

It's not in the guarantine folder. I found another board on which another person has the same problem. He had used about 4 Adware/Spyware programs and none found it. I ran Adware last night - didn't show up.

From what I read about the bridge.dll file, there seems to be no legitimate purpose. Do you agree? But, my bridge.dll file is not in the location that it is usually found. I can delete it - just hope it doesn't cause that error message about not being able to find the .file as some people get.

I'm going to check my registry again, but I don't think I am going to find anything.

I'm wondering if there is a "bug" in NAV. It gives the path, but the file is not there.

Thanks. I had not looked in the guarantine folder.

Copy the quote box to notepad. Save it as DPF.bat, change the Save as type to All Files. Double click to run. This will create a text file showing the contents of the Downloaded Programs File folder. Post the contents. If it's there, even hidden, we'll see it.

    That's neat!

    The file is there.

So, how do I get rid of it?

How about the bridge.dll file under my folder Program Files\Common Files\Intel Shared\H32X. I have no idea if it is used by Intel.

The text file for the Downloaded Program Files shows 120 files and 4 Direstories.

I can copy it here if you think it's necessary - you may be able to find another problem.

    Thanks,
    nz

Yes, please post the log. Check the properties, version tab of bridge.dll for company info, version, etc. and let us know what you find.

I am copying the list of files from the log.

As for the bridge.dll file. It is a legitimate file:

Are all those files suppose to stay in that directory? Most are small files, but it seems eventually it would need to be cleaned up.

I realized that I had a couple of small programs that will create a directory listing. I ran one and the bridge.info file shows up in a file created by that program, too.

Can you explain why? Why doesn't it show up in a search when I have hidden and system files marked to show? And, I can't seem to find it going through the files and folders manually either.

I am anxious to see if getting rid of this file will solve my shutdown problem.

Those files are the result of AxtiveX controls being downloaded. They can all be safely deleted. To delete just bridge.inf, click start>run, type cmd and hit enter. Type

    del C:\WINNT\DOWNLO~1\bridge.inf

    hit enter.

    To do everything, type

    del /s C:\WINNT\DOWNLO~1 /f

    and hit enter.

To delete the CONFLICT.1 sub-directory, type

    rmdir C:\WINNT\DOWNLO~1\CONFLICT.1

    and hit enter.

You can also copy paste those commands from here.

If you run the bat again when done, you should only see the 2 directories . and .. and the DPF.txt
Go to RAV or Windows Update, where an ActiveX control needs to be allowed, and you will see their files when the bat is run again.

    NAV/bridge.inf

When I type cmd and enter, C:\Documents and Settings\Owner is displayed in DOS.

I thought I would have to be at the C prompt, but I pasted the command to delete bridge.inf and hit enter anyway.

Then the same path came up.

I ran the DPf.bat again and bridge.inf is gone. So, I guess it worked.:)

I'll have to delete the others when I have more time -doing other things right now.

Which two directories will be left? The dpf.txt file shows 5 directories, but I can't see any directories under the folder Downloaded Program Files.

If I understand you correctly, all the files in the Downloaded Program Files folder are the result of AxtiveX control and they are downloaded EACH time you go to a page that needs them - no need to keep any of the files.

I noticed in WINNT I have a bunch of Windows Update and service pack uninstall files. They are colored blue on my machine. I can get rid of those now, right?

May I share this infomation on another forum - if I can find it again? :) It seems the person who had the same problem never resolved the issue. Or, he went elsewhere for an answer.

    Thanks again.

    These will be left.

    Directory of C:\WINNT\DOWNLO~1

    04/19/2005 12:21 PM <DIR> .
    04/19/2005 12:21 PM <DIR> ..

If you do the rmdir conflict.1 command, that directory goes away, and the <DIR> . and <DIR> .. inside of that directory will go too. The rmdir command deletes the directory and everything in it.

Yes, they come from ActiveX controls. If you go to RAV, or anywhere else that uses one, and allow it to be installed but don't delete it, when you go back, as long as their ActiveX control has not been changed, you will not need to load it again. That's one of the reasons ActiveX controls are a security threat. The bad guys use them too, and once installed, they can run their dirty deed without your approval or even your knowledge, whenever you open one of their pages.

Windows Update and SP Uninstall files..........completely up to you, but once you remove them, you remove the uninstaller that comes with it, and lose the ability to uninstall them should you need to. Service Packs make backups of the files they replace too, should you want to roll back. Not sure if they are in the uninstall folder, but that would be my guess.

By all means yes, feel free to share with whomever you like. ;)

    NAV/bridge.inf

Thank you so much. I learned a lot today!

I have plenty of disk space left, so I'll just leave those uninstall files until I have to delete them.

My computer will probably become obsolete before I run out of disk space.:)

    Hi,

Today I tried deleting all the files in the Downloaded Prgoram Files folder per your instructions. It didn't work.:(

I copied and pasted the command. It did delete the Conflict.1 folder, but all the files were left and all show damaged.

I managed to remove through Explorer all that show except what shows in Explorer as Symantec RuFSI Utility Class. It also shows as damaged. I went through NAV and thought I unchecked everything that would be running, but I can't get rid of that file. It may be the icon in the tray. I can't get rid of that either.

This is the DPF file as of now:

Is the desktop.ini from the Symantec Class File?

I went to Windows Update and checked for updates and I also ran NAV Live Update to make sure NAV was working. No new files were downloaded to the Downloaded Program File that I can see.

    What did I do wrong?

    Thanks

The desktop.ini file is a system created file that stores info about your environment. It's fine. I don't see the Symantec file in your log. Not sure in what order you did the commands, but this one

    del /s C:\WINNT\DOWNLO~1 /f

should delete all files in the folder and sub-folders.
    This one

    rmdir C:\WINNT\DOWNLO~1\CONFLICT.1

would delete the Conflict.1 directory. If you did it first, it may not work due to files being in the folder. Your DPF directory is basically empty, from the looks of the DPF log. Try a RAV scan. It should prompt you to install an ActiveX, which will show up in the DPF folder once installed.

Here's mine after doing the above.

    NAV/Bridge.inf

    Dave,

I deleted the bridge.inf file day before yesterday per your instructions.

Yesterday, I decided to get rid of all the files and pasted this command:

    del /s C:\WINNT\DOWNLO~1 /f

I did do the rm...Cconflict.1. It was gone after I did the above. But, all the remaining files were still there and all damaged.

I deleted all from Windows except the Symantec file.

I went to the the Symantec site and ran the online free scan. That fixed the damaged Symantec tile - overwrote the damaged file. That file is a shared file - guess that's why it can't be deleted.

I can only see 7 files in the Downloaded Prgoram Files folder now, but here is what you see frroom the DPF file - just since yesterday:

All is well as far as I'm concerned.

Now I have to keep working on my shutdown problem - reboots instead of shutting down. I had that problem when I first got my machine a couple of years ago, but it finally fixed itself. Now it's back. I already tried unchecking start up on system failure. I deleted the temporary interenet files one night and it shut down. I don't know if that the entire problem or not.

    Thanks again.
