I have Norton AntiVirus 2004 set up to start at boot and to run on AutoProtect.
For the last few weeks, the NAV icon in the Notification Area (Systray for old timers) loads first, but has the Disable redX through it. Then all the other programs and Systray icons load and finally at the end there is a little shuddering noise from what seems to be the floppy disk drive (could be wrong) and the redX goes away.
Any ideas on removing the redX from the NAV icon right from the beginning?

You have NAV options configured to scan removable drives at boot, and probably at shutdown as well. Not necessary.

TonyT--Thanks for the post, but sadly that is not the solution. I presume you mean the box for "Scan all removable media for boot viruses when it is mounted ".
I wonder where these guys learn to write English. :)

    Jim,
I'm on NIS 2003 and I notice a difference in behaviour after SP2. It is said (and possibly true ...... ......) that XP SP2 initiates the network connection among the last during start up to ensure that the Windows Firewall is running nicely when it occurs. Norton is definitely among the last to be let loose but the red cross in the NIS icon (firewall) is always gone when it reports that the network card has been initiated.

The red cross in the NAV icon, in particular after an update to NAV, will linger a bit longer. Updates seem to need a "shake down" restart.

    Christer--Thanks for your input.
Are you saying that you also get (or have gotten in the past) a redX on the NAV icon in the Systray (forgive me Notification Area) when your desktop first shows up in a boot?
I contacted Dell today and they led me through a "reconfiguration" of the PC's IDE settings.
The jury is still out. Sometimes it seems to work; other times not.
P.S. Yes, I did Update Norton NAV a few weeks ago. (My new Dell Dimension came with a three month free trial of NIS. When that expired, I installed NAV (only) from a NSW 2004 CD.)

    Jim,

Yes! My icons in the NA appears in this order, printer, NIS (FireWall) and NAV. Usually, the red-X in NIS go out last, immediately after initiation of the NIC. Before initiation of the NIC, nothing bad can happen.

I don't know if You've seen the thread about NetDetect but investigating that critter, I Ghosted back and reinstalled NIS 2003 twice. This involved retrieving all updates twice and the first reboot after an update to NAV was on a few occasions greeted by a lingering red-X in the NAV icon.

Even when NAV has not been updated, it can happen on rare (very rare) occasions.

Is there a "short version" of that? It seems to me that IDE settings have nothing to do with the order in which Windows will let applications autostart ...... ...... !
