I have Mozilla1.7.5 and just installed NAV2005. In the NAV book it states that the e-mail protection will not work if the POP3 mail program has SSL. I looked at the security in Mozilla and it seems to have SSL. Does it? If it does, NAV states I should turn off the e-mail check, even though leaving it on doesn't seem to affect anything that I can detect. What do you all think?

    ackerberg,

You really don't need to use the email protection option in NAV 2005. As long as you have auto protect enabled, that is sufficient. The ISP you use, doesn't require SSL, and I assume that it isn't enabled here:

Edit | Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings | Server Settings

I haven't used email protection since NAV 3000, and I now run NAV 5000. Perhaps other users will chime in here and give you their opinions.

If you want to play chicken with viruses in your Inbox, but not downloaded, have Mail scanning enabled. chances are that you will lose your Inbox. Just don't enable scanning, use some wisdom if you see attachments, and if you don't, make sure that your AV is up to date. Too many people lose their mail because they don't know the consequences, and NAV has still not got it, either.

There is, however, a way to avoid losing your Inbox to NAV quarantine, if you do use email protection:

Exclude MSF files from NAV Autoprotect, although it won't prevent the Inbox files from being quarantined, or deleted. Exclude the MSF files, in addition to the individual Inbox files. NAV is suspected of corrupting the MSF files.

The NAV Exclusions list would then show MSF, and the paths to your individual Inbox files for each of your profiles: e.g.,
    < path >Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail\pop.isp.net\Inbox
    < path >Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt\Mail\pop.isp-1.net\Inbox, etc.

Include each of your Mail Account's Inbox path.

Just to add my 2 cents regarding Norton AntiVirus's quarantine and Netscape/Mozilla inbox.
I had very bad experience with Norton's quarantine (in NAV 2003). My solution is to enable incoming email scanning but disallowing any further actions suggested by Norton. Don't delete the email by Norton, or I will need to manually rebuild my Inbox.

It would be wise to have Norton AntiVirus alerting me if there's any virus. And if there's any email that contains worms or virus, just delete it from Netscape/Mozilla inbox. You will be safe.

If your ISP has SpamAssassin, I would suggest you enable that for your account.

    Hope this helps.

    Antony,

Even though email scanning is disabled, this is what Symantic says:
This is not to say that your advice is wrong, by any means, I am just emphasizing that turning off email protection does not prevent NAV from detecting the nasties from Mail...

    Thanks Ramona,

The "Auto Protection" should be left on. (I missed that, sorry for confusing.)
