Nasties in HJT

    the first thing to alert me was i could not open my BT Broadband Desktop help. i tried uninstalling to reinstall and through the process i got a message saying pskill.exe could not be found.

    i've reinstalled (RESTARTED SORRY) and i ran hijack this and using the HJT online checker a few nasties and potential nasties appear. may i post the HJT

    the last two underlined are labelled 'possible nasties' (O9 and O17) whereas the others are labelled 'nasty' (the R1's) i have on occasion removed any O17's but am unsure of the others. help appreciated thanks

    Hi Tenchy,

    Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed.

    Then fix this one: O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{FAB1D6EF-A85C-4126-9E68-3D1D2F89667D}: NameServer = 62.6.40.162 194.72.0.98

    Then re reun your scanning tools in safe mode.

    What scanning tools do you have?

    i removed the O17 and the O2, the O10 gave me

    You should use LSPFix for this, which is available fron http://cexx.org/lspfix.ht <--should i do this?

    if the O10 belongs to webhancer, newnet or commonname, spybot s&d can remove it automatically. spybot is available at http://www.spybot.info

    i removed the O17 before going into safe mode where i ran spy sweeper (was clean), ad-aware (it found 1 tracking cookie and an mru list which i removed, it finds them if i run in normal mode). microsoft anti spyware (was clean) and in safe mode i couldn't seem to start norton anti virus though i ran that yesterday morning in normal mode.

    i run norton and it says i have about 360,000 files, this was less i am sure (about 220,000) and was once over 400,000

    anyhow, after i restarted in normal mode i saw tonys advice to remove the O2 and O10 so that was when i got the above and wonder whether to run the LSP fix thing at cexx.org?

    so if i ignore the 'posible nasty' in sitehound (which i installed last week after receiving mail regarding mailwasher - which ii like using- ). there are two R1's nasty according to the hijack this log helper though not touching until one of you kind fellows say

    also i notice a few entries for the avant browser, this was just something i tried and no longer need it. can they be taken out?

    yes i still have the problem with BT help, i get a 'this page can not be displayed' and gives instructions to check my settings match my LAN or ISP provider under 'connections' in the internet options

    I would use LSPfix to repair this, only because the file is missing.

    About the only thing I spot which could be a potential risk is the MessengerPlus!. During the installation of it, you are asked if you want to install C2Media. If you said no, you are fine. More on this here.

    i removed the O8's and the O10, the R1's i need not worry about then? i have recently had the YOP (yahoo online protection) installed. i got sick of it and took it off my msconfig startup as i suspected that to be the problem with my BT help. though after seeing it wasn't, i put it back on and my constant messing with stuff i don't understand digs deeper holes for me.

    And yes I choose to refuse the sponsors on msgplus as I was caught out by that a couple of year back

    i'm chasing the BT help thing up with BT so thats no major thing.

    One other question? Is it best to run ad aware, spybot etc in safe mode rather than just on a normal desktop?

    Is it best to run ad aware, spybot etc in safe mode rather than just on a normal desktop?
    It is better for the reason that malware will be less likely to be running and interfere. It also makes it easier for these two programs to delete files as they are less likely to be "in use ".

    The log looks clean to me.

    i am puzzled with this bt help program and a message i should check my connection. on the LSP fix program i had 3 .dll files (mswsock, winmr and rsvpsp) in the column headed KEEP, i removed the one in the column marked REMOVE. any advice on these? i checked google on the mswsock.dll and the word 'malware' was there which prompted me to come back and ask if i should remove these three even though they are in a column headed KEEP

    so from that it seems an important component

    i got mail from BT and they asked me to do the usual deleting temp files, cookies, history but another step was to type 'cod' (without the ' and ') to obtain a ping. a window popped up saying windows could not find such a file

    CMD or cmd, short for command, opens a command window (dos window).

    thanks, i looked again at the mail and it definitely said 'cod' but cmd worked champion, i sent results as they requested but the next bit doesn't work in having to type 'iconic\release' and 'iconic\renew'. i'll see if they get back in touch.

    it appears that they may be using a different language than English and your mail client does not translate correctly. (not your mail client's problem though) Else that support person does not really know the commands!

    the command is: (upper or lower case)

    Displays all current TCP/IP network configuration values and refreshes Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name System (DNS) settings. Used without parameters, ipconfig displays the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for all adapters.

    /all : Displays the full TCP/IP configuration for all adapters. Without this parameter, ipconfig displays only the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway values for each adapter. Adapters can represent physical interfaces, such as installed network adapters, or logical interfaces, such as dial-up connections.

    /renew [Adapter] : Renews DHCP configuration for all adapters (if an adapter is not specified) or for a specific adapter if the Adapter parameter is included. This parameter is available only on computers with adapters that are configured to obtain an IP address automatically. To specify an adapter name, type the adapter name that appears when you use ipconfig without parameters.

    /release [Adapter] : Sends a DHCPRELEASE message to the DHCP server to release the current DHCP configuration and discard the IP address configuration for either all adapters (if an adapter is not specified) or for a specific adapter if the Adapter parameter is included. This parameter disables TCP/IP for adapters configured to obtain an IP address automatically. To specify an adapter name, type the adapter name that appears when you use ipconfig without parameters.

    /flushdns : Flushes and resets the contents of the DNS client resolver cache. During DNS troubleshooting, you can use this procedure to discard negative cache entries from the cache, as well as any other entries that have been added dynamically.

    /displaydns : Displays the contents of the DNS client resolver cache, which includes both entries preloaded from the local Hosts file and any recently obtained resource records for name queries resolved by the computer. The DNS Client service uses this information to resolve frequently queried names quickly, before querying its configured DNS servers.

    /registerdns : Initiates manual dynamic registration for the DNS names and IP addresses that are configured at a computer. You can use this parameter to troubleshoot a failed DNS name registration or resolve a dynamic update problem between a client and the DNS server without rebooting the client computer. The DNS settings in the advanced properties of the TCP/IP protocol determine which names are registered in DNS.

    /showclassid Adapter : Displays the DHCP class ID for a specified adapter. To see the DHCP class ID for all adapters, use the asterisk (*) wildcard character in place of Adapter. This parameter is available only on computers with adapters that are configured to obtain an IP address automatically.

    /setclassid Adapter [ClassID] : Configures the DHCP class ID for a specified adapter. To set the DHCP class ID for all adapters, use the asterisk (*) wildcard character in place of Adapter. This parameter is available only on computers with adapters that are configured to obtain an IP address automatically. If a DHCP class ID is not specified, the current class ID is removed.

    /?: Displays help at the command prompt.

    Remarks
    • The ipconfig command is the command-line equivalent to the winipcfg command, which is available in Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 98, and Windows 95. Although Windows XP does not include a graphical equivalent to the winipcfg command, you can use Network Connections to view and renew an IP address. To do this, open Network Connections, right-click a network connection, click Status, and then click the Support tab.

    • This command is most useful on computers that are configured to obtain an IP address automatically. This enables users to determine which TCP/IP configuration values have been configured by DHCP, Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA), or an alternate configuration.

    • If the Adapter name contains any spaces, use quotation marks around the adapter name (that is, "Adapter Name ").

    • For adapter names, ipconfig supports the use of the asterisk (*) wildcard character to specify either adapters with names that begin with a specified string or adapters with names that contain a specified string. For example, Local* matches all adapters that start with the string Local and *Con* matches all adapters that contain the string Con.

    • This command is available only if the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) protocol is installed as a component in the properties of a network adapter in Network Connections


    Examples
    To display the basic TCP/IP configuration for all adapters, type:

    ipconfig

    To display the full TCP/IP configuration for all adapters, type:

    ipconfig /all

    To renew a DHCP-assigned IP address configuration for only the Local Area Connection adapter, type:

    To flush the DNS resolver cache when troubleshooting DNS name resolution problems, type:

    i got the help thing working, i wrote and showed up the 'cod' and 'iconic' mistakes and said the mail was getting far to technical and if there were more 'errors' i felt i was going to do something i shouldn't.
