    Hi all,

At our home, we have 3 PCs: mine (laptop on a dock), the wife's, and the eldest son's (both fixed PCs). Two are Windows 7, one is XP.

We all have different files on our individual PCs and there is no centralization. I'd like to change that.

So I thought of a decent home NAS or some other storage device. I've looked at things like Google Drive, but we have well north of a TB of data and I think it just makes more sense to buy a local device. Could be wrong, opinions welcomed.

    What would y'all recommend?

    Thanks!

You can build a NAS box for the home, or for that matter for the work very easily. A motherboard, CPU, memory and as much storage space as you care. FreeNAS provides the software - free.... Little bit of a steep learning curve, but it becomes clearer as you work with it. I currently have a home-built NAS box with an old P4 something or other, 2 G of memory a CD (not DVD) and 2 X 1TB drives in a RAID1 array - mirror. It's a little slow for the way I want to use it. I use it as an active drive as opposed to a storage facility. I put the OS (FreeBSD) on a CD set to boot so when the power drops out, it comes back and self boots. Very Simple, and it works. I have 2 wired PC's and 1 wireless laptop - all access the NAS box with no problem. Give it a try - it's free......

Food for thought... If you wanted to have another computer - Windows Home Server is something to consider.

You can automatically send images and updates to the images of your three computers to WHS.

WHS is being discontinued this year but will still be supported for several more years to come.

I strongly suggest getting a Buffalo Link Station. They are very easy to setup, just connect to your router by wire and run its wizard on one of your computers.

Setting up a NAS server on a computer can also be done, but it would require of you some study and then trial and error, as well as hours of tinkering and adjusting.

The Buffalo devices also have USB ports. Thus you could get a terrabyte Link Station for about $100.00 and then add external USB hard drives to it as your needs increase.

Some of the Buffalos also have a built in Media Server which use UPnP/DLNA and can be accessed by cell phones, gaming consoles and smart TVs.
