Have AV installed (checks email in/out), have hardware Firewall, but August seems to be National Virus Month. For further protection (kids computer) would like to set up filter / rules for "attachments ". Want to isolate ".exe and .pif" type attachments. There is no "attachment" selection option in the "target" drop down dialog list. Can "customize" allow the creation of a target value to test attachments against filter rules? I understand Netscape can not open the attachment and run the file UNLESS clicked on.... and that is what I'm worried about.

If you have AntiVirus scanned at background and you are using Netscape Mail (not Outlook Express), you can relax a bit. Just remember not to open all unknown attachments.

(I don't know if there's any filter for attachments)

    Hi Antony

Adults understand about attachments, unfortunately when kids see attachments emailed from there friends (hijacked address), I would like to remove the temptation and have them auto delete.

the only way I can think of is to have your AntiVirus automatically deletes inflected emails. (Please note, the entire email inbox may became troublesome.(*) You can "lock" this preference in your Anti Virus settings.

(*) Can still be used, but such deleted entry may stay there. Details later, if you really want to know.

    Thanks Antony.

AV lack "new virus" defense tools (until they write script to defend against it). Proper M$ updates can defeat most new viruses, except w95 is not included in M$ updates. Hopefully someone can locate where Nestcape / Mozilla stores "attachment" names in received emails.

I understand your concern about no protection from AV about "new viruses ".
I think, you have two choices: light choice, and a hard choice, depending on your kids age.

Light choice - If you have a broadband, and you leave you computer on, set your AV update to an hour before your kids come from school. Then you have a very slight chance, that a new virus was just sent to your computer in between your AV was updated, and you came home from work.

Hard choice - use a program lock like this:
    http://www.webattack.com/get/proglock.shtml
    until you got home.

I am not really with you.
I personally use Norton Anti Virus, and the Auto Protection works for me. (Alerts me virus/worms in attachements) Of course, I must say that I've been very careful over these years.

the emails are stored in Netscape's inbox folder (profile folders) and if you use plain text editor to open those, you will see all attachements expanded in plain text format.

Another recommendation besides uptodate virus definitions and important MS updates, set up your firewall (internet security or zoom alert) well. Also, remember to teach your kid NOT to install whatever softwares that's not from safe sources.

Dennis is talking about "new viruses" protection.
How can you be safe, if you updated your AV program at, say 2 PM, and a totally new virus is sent to your mailbox after 2 PM, or even couple of hours before, so your AV program has no clue about it?
A firewall doesn't have anything to do here.
You just have to be careful. I realize, that you have to be extremely unlucky to catch a virus between two 24 hours updates, but in theory it may happen.
Don't count on kids being careful. They are not.

Sorry, did not understand "new virus. "
However, I thought there's somthing called "Bloodhood" protection (Norton Anti Virus), it will protect unknown and new virus.

Firewalls won't protect you from virus, but it will stop un-necessary attacks and unwanted connections to whatever websites. (worms)

P.S. when I was a kid, I was very careful, too careful that Mum was not happy.

Broni - Thanks - Good suggestions.

Antony - When a NEW virus is released, no one has AV protection.
I would assume 12 - 36 hours after detect would be normal turn time for AV's company's to "create and release" a solution. Many viruses can be stopped by keeping M$ OS/IE upto date... BUT w95 is no longer supported by M$.

Solution for now on kids computer.....
Will look for a small plain text email program that does NOT support attachments.

Would appreciate any updates to "how and where" N7's display attachment file name / extension type in email headers. My current spam program has the tools to look for them, just don't know where to point it.

Thanks for your comments and support.
