    Two days ago my Mail was missing. I followed a lot of the advice that was given to birdiebob with some success. I re-established my netscape web mail and it works fine. I did alot of backing up and file swapping and now I have my pop mail back. I can access all my old mail but it is now longer the default and the get mail button won't highlight. I also tried changing it to default from mail acct. settings but it won't highlight the default option either. I have the acct name as pop.teleport.com. Could it be wrong or did I do something very very wrong while moving my files?

    Welcome to the Forum, hedge!

    Hi hedge,

    Why don't you tell us what you did, so that we can better understand your problem.
    Did you create a new Profile? If so, how did you transfer your Mail files from the old Profile to the new?
    The account name would have no effect on the problem. However, your server settings would be suspect. You might want to double check to ensure that they are correct.

    Hi Ramona,
    Well I'll start with my web mail because that was the easiest not just to fix but to remember as well. I just opened netscape mail and it asked if I wanted to open a new web mail account or use an existing acct., so I used the existing acct. info and it worked.

    The mail that I use 90 percent of the time is my POP mail with earthlink. Since all my mail was gone from the mail program but the files were still in Windows explorer I thought it was a profile problem so I made another profile per your new profile instructions that I found on this board. It didn't seem to work because when I restarted the computer and the program it ignored that I had a new profile but it at least showed the web mail. At this point I became a little frantic and started copying files out of the backups I made earlier. So I used my old profile and changed the local directory setting to point to my new files (without the msf files) using C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\pop.teleport.com.

    Also under mail and newsgroup acct. settings where it says 'this is a special acct with no Identities' I have pop.teleport.com as my acct. name.

    I hope this gives you enough info to diagnose where it all started going wrong and why it won't let me make the POP acct my default. Thanks!!

    Hi hedge,
    This is probably where things went wrong. I need you to clarify a bit further, exactly what you did at this point:
    You went back to the OLD Profile. Then changed the salted folder name to that of the NEW Profile Mail folder, in the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings? No can do... Decide which Profile you are going to use, and move all Mail files to that Profile. (That is, if I'm understanding you correctly.)
    'this is a special acct with no Identities' I don't see that setting anywhere in the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings? Tell me exactly where this appears.

    I did some snooping around at the Earthlink site. In the Support section, for Email settings: This is the information given:

    * POP Server: pop.onemain.com
    * SMTP Server: smtp.earthlink.net
    * NNTP News Server: news.earthlink.net (use your email address and password for authentication)
    * FTP Server format: ftp-www.domain (use your email address and password for authentication)

    Onemain.com Domains

    NOTE: If your domain is listed below use the onemain.com server settings.
    brevard.net
    fn.net
    midwest.net
    teleport.com
    ---

    Could it be that your Server name has changed, without your having been informed? You might want to check this out with Earthlink. It appears that you should be using onemain.com rather than teleport.com.

    Ramona :D

    EDIT:
    Have you installed a Theme other than Modern or Classic? This often causes Mail to be inaccessible....

    Hi Ramona,

    Part of the problem with me describing what I did is that I can't remember the details very well. But here it goes...After re-establishing my web mail I went to the profile manager and made a new profile. I restarted the computer and found a new kxxxxxx.slt folder. Now I have the following folders under my profilename folder: xxxxxxxx.slt, Cache, Chrome, ImapMail with subfolders imap.mail.netcenter.com and imap.mail.netcenter-1.com, the new
    kxxxxxxx.slt, Mail with subfolder pop.teleport.com, and News.

    I didn't change the new salted folder at all, I just took files out of my backed up mail and put them into my mail under my first profile. Then I moved my other profile name folders out of the profiles folder into a backup directory.

    Now to answer your question about
    'this is a special acct with no Identities'. When I click on my pop.teleport.com acct under mail and newsgroup settings I get a different form than I have for the netscape web mail acct. It says "This is a special account with no identities associated with it ". This is where I have the Pop.teleport.com listed (since your last reply I have changed it to pop.onemain.com without any affect). I think both are supposed to work. Earthlink used a teleport server but just recently they have been migrating people to the onemain server.

    Thinking back now I could have tried to re-establish my pop acct. in an incorrect local access only account .... is this possible?

    I also have noticed extra files in my old (current) profile name folder. I do recall an xxxxxxxx.s and an xxxxxxxx.w file but now I have many others. Could you tell me why I have so many similar files, this is what they look like:

    31xxxxxx.s
    31xxxxxx.s.msf
    31xxxxxx.w
    31xxxxxx.w.msf
    39xxxxxx.s
    39xxxxxx.w
    42xxxxxx.s
    42xxxxxx.s.msf
    42xxxxxx.w

    Thanks for all your help I hope these detail shed more light on what I've done.

    Hi hedge,
    Bingo! You created your POP account in the Local Folder. The Local Folder is used to save postings to newsgroups, etc.

    With Netscape closed:
    Back up your Profiles Folder...

    Open Netscape
    Mail & NG Accts.
    Delete the existing Mail account
    Close Netscape

    Open Netscape
    Open Mail & NG Accts.
    Select New Account
    The Wizard will take you thru setting up your Account.

    Once the account is established, ensure the location of the Mail folder points to the correct folder on your HD, i.e., the folder which contains all your Mail. This is found in the "Server Settings ", Mail & NG Acct. Settings.

    The Files ending with .s and .w are your passwords and Form fill in information files.

    In addition to adding the following two files (somenumber.s and somenumber.w) to your Profile you should also edit lines in the user.js or prefs.js, to point to the existing file (or rename the existing file to the new name). This is because of the new salted folder name.

    somenumber.s (Password data)
    user_pref( "signon.SignonFileName ", "xxxxxxxx.s ");

    somenumber.w (Fill Form data)
    user_pref( "wallet.SchemaValueFileName ", "xxxxxxxx.w ");

    Post back with any questions.

    Hi Ramona!!

    I'm happy that you could have a Bingo moment. I went into the mail newgroup acct settings and found that it wouldn't let me delete the acct. so I deleted the name of the acct. When I restarted the computer it said that the acct name was 'nobody on local folders'. I took this to mean that it was not looking at my mail folders anymore. I then established the new pop acct through the wizard and pointed it to my mail folder that was previously a local acct.

    Can I keep my existing xxxxxxx.s and xxxxxxx.w files since nothing got deleted and they match my files in the profile name folder? (there are others in there too)

    I looked in the prefs.js and it points to the new name but it also left in the old old local folder pointer.

    user_pref( "mail.server.server2.hostname ", "Local Folders ");

    user_pref( "mail.server.server3.hostname ", "pop.onemain.com ");

    I am about to edit out all references to the local folder but I thought that I would be better off to contact you first.

    This is what the local folder acct looks like in the prefs.js now.
    user_pref( "mail.server.server2.hostname ", "Local Folders ");
    user_pref( "mail.server.server2.login_at_startup ", true);
    user_pref( "mail.server.server2.name ", " ");
    user_pref( "mail.server.server2.type ", "none ");
    user_pref( "mail.server.server2.userName ", "nobody ");

    Thanks again

    Hi hedge,
    If the salted name is the same, no problem!

    Tread carefully... I would strongly advise you to create a user.js file.

    Back up your prefs.js file before you delete anything. You will be starting from scratch if you corrupt this file. If your Mail is working, no problems encountered, I would not delete any entries in the prefs.js.

    Hope your problems are behind you!

    Hi Ramona
    Thanks for the advice on creating a user.js file.
    I was all excited about being able to access my mail but I started celebrating too soon. Even though I can get at the mail on my hard drive I tryed checking it on the server and got the following message:

    'The PASS command did not succeed. Mail server pop.onemain.com responded: Bad password or unknown user name.'

    I looked at the xxxxxx.s files and they have the signon info (encrypted).
    I figure that the xxxxxx.s in prefs.js should match one of the xxxxxx.s files with my Pop mail signon. I've put the matched file name in both the prefs.js and the user.js but the user.js file doesn't modify the prefs.js. Are they supposed to be in the same folder because they aren't?

    Thanks

    Hi hedge,

    The PASS Command error is usually an intermittent occurrence. I have seen quite a few posts on the NG's referring to the error, but most are only an occasional happening.

    When you edit your prefs.js file, ensure that Netscape is closed. You can edit your user.js file with Netscape open, but the changes will not take effect until you restart Netscape. Any entry in the user.js file will be reflected in the prefs.js file. If you delete an entry in the user.js file, remember to delete it, or comment it out in the prefs.js file. To comment out, or disable an entry, insert two forward slashes plus a trailing space before the script:
    // user_pref( "mail.collect_email_address ", false);

    The user.js and prefs.js file should both be saved to your salted folder. Any entry in the user.js file will overwrite the prefs.js.

    Hi Ramona,
    =====================
    The PASS Command error is usually an intermittent occurrence. I have seen quite a few posts on the NG's referring to the error, but most are only an occasional happening.
    ========================
    I don't know what I am supposed to do about the PASS Command message since I'm betting that I caused it and not that it is a random happening that will go away. Is it a server problem or maybe something in the prefs.js file?

    Another random happening that I don't understand is my Imap mail that I thought was working perfectly is now sending 2 copies of each email that I send out while giving me a message that it couldn't save a copy at all.

    I think it could be that I have created a user.js file and maybe a line in my prefs.js is supposed to be disabled.

    Since I have moved files around I've been wondering if I have them in the right structure at all. Do you know of a resource that would show me what is supposed to be in each folder. I looked at the user.js file link that you recommended and compared their structure to my file layout to get to the xxxxxxxx.slt file. It matchs if I had WinNT but I have Win98se. So I'm wondering what else is wrong with my files. (Especially why do I have so many xxxxxxxxx.s and xxxxxxxx.w files ????)

    Thanks for your help and patience.

    Hi hedge

    Keep the faith hedge, Ramonia has gotten through the worst. The Imap mail is a easy fix. (It's not one of N7's better efforts). From mail screen...............
    Edit| Mail and NG settings| Your Imac Account| copies and folders
    Check should be in "Place a copy in "
    Radio button active for "Sent Folder on "
    Choose your "POP" mail account.
    Repeat this "same steps" for "Draft and Templates ". This account wll now work smoothly, not get the type of error messages you were receiving. Naturally, when you want to check "sent folder" activity for your Imap account, it will be in your "POP" sent folder.

    Dennis,

    You not only helped me with the Imap mail you also made me realize that my problems receiving mail came about when I changed my Pop server name from teleport.com to onemain.com. It was a recommendation from earthlink but for some reason Netscape didn't recognize the new server name. It could be that I needed to change the port number or maybe the prefs.js file had some inconsistent lines. Either way I was able to download my mail for the first time in many days. I appreciate your quick identification of the symptoms.

    All the best!

    Hi Hedge

    I'm glad Ramonia's guidance got you through the woods. The .js files can be a bugger, but you had the best helping you through it. N7's numerious options for email flexibility comes with an attention to detail. A suggestion, you might want to consider GoBack ..... Mine came bundled with Norton System Works 2002.
    When anything goes south on my / your box ( "Two days ago my mail was missing "), a few clicks of the keys, and everything is fun again. It does NOT replace system backup's, or save us from the evils of the world... but almost.
