I'm hoping someone might be able to help with an annoying problem I have when sending emails.

When I first start up OE 6 in the morning (I have an XP home system), some of the first emails I try to send fail to go out, resulting in the following error mesage:

"The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'johndoe@yahoo.com'. Subject 'Hello', Account: 'Wenet', Server: 'smtp.well.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '471 4.7.1 Relaying Denied: Authenticate with POP first (See http://www.well.com/emailhelp.html for help sending mail)', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 471, Error Number: 0x800CCC79 "

So I keep trying to resend it, and after about one minute (or half-a-dozen re-sends of the email), it finally goes through. It doesn't happen if I send mail to myself, and it doesn't happen if I have an attachment on the email.

The problem only occurs the first time I try to send email to someone. After the resends of the email finally succeed, then subsequent attempts to send that person an email work fine.

As I say, it's only the first attempts that fail. It's almost as if the server is too "groggy" in the morning to recognize the addressee. But after a few "splashes of water on the face" (i.e., my half-a-dozen resends of the email), then the server finally "wakes up" and from then on sends emails out just fine.

Does what I'm saying here make sense?

And does anyone know what's the cause of this problem?

    Thanks for your help.

    David

    Thanks for that link, Brett.

I, too, am using a new ISP (Pac Bell dsl) to log onto an old mail server that used to provide ISP service but now functions only as mail drop and conferencing system (it's called the WELL, or well.com). And when I check my account configuration in OE6, I see that my incoming mail server is mail.well.com, and my outgoing server is set as smtp.well.com.

Now, if I read that thread correctly, it seems that my problem might be solved by setting a different outgoing mail service -- i.e., the mail server for my Pac Bell dsl ISP.

    Is that correct?

By the way, I have no problem receiving mail. It's just the outgoing mail that fails to go out -- at least at first, until the server "warms up," if you will.

Anyway, should I try changing the outgoing mail server?

Your old ISP (well.com) may not allow you to access their mail server when you are connected via Pac Bell. Speak to well.com's Technical Support people - they'll be able to confirm whether or not this is indeed the cause of the problem.

Well, I know wwell.com allows me to do that at least most of the time. It's only when OE is first fired up in the morning that I have these outgoing mail delays -- and then only for a while.
