    Hi
I am on a friends PC at the moment, and i have noticed that when IE 6 is loaded, a blue 'XP Style' bar appears at the bottom of the window. i have tried removing it with ad-aware and spy sweeper, but it is still there.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated, as it is very frustrating...

    Thanks in advance,

    Hello Liam,

MySearch stuff is obvious, but let either Newt or Pete look at it before you do any deleting.

Also noticed you have Messenger Plus - it is spyware in and of itself - read the EULA - and is the source of much of what an Ad-Aware scan finds.

    Regards - Charles

I'm not positive how much of the junk will be auto-removed by running current (and updated) versions of Ad-Aware and Spybot but both would be a good idea at this point. Download links from Quicklinks in my signature.

I'd start with Ad-aware. Download, update, set it to the maximum removal level and run it then get rid of all it finds.

Spybot - run and remove all it flags as problems then immunize for further protection. The remaining items it finds are purely optional since they are history files and similar.

After that, certainly remove any references to any of the MyWebSearch items via Hijackthis. If the app has an uninstall feature, use it. Otherwise, a boot to safe mode and removing the folder is the best option. That should cure the unwanted redirection you are seeing with
    Code:
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://mysearchnow.com/passthrough/...//www.msn.co.uk

Look around in some posts here and you will find good step-by-step instructions for getting rid of Messenger Plus!. It is also spyware sludge that you absolutely don't need and don't want.

C:\PROGRA~1\IDOLBO~1\holefast1.exe - can't find much information on this one which is a bad sign in itself. Again, remove all possible via Hijackthis then locate and remove the folder from safe mode.

After all the trash removal is complete, a couple other things I strongly recommend:
    - download SypwareBlaster and let it block all the things it can. Unlike Ad-aware and Spybot, it's more of a passive app so just updating once a month or so is all you'll need to do.
    - load a service pack. SP2 is due soon but since you are working on a friend's machine, I'll assume he isn't a PC whiz so probably safer at this point to put on SP1 and wait until SP2 has been out a month or two before upgrading to it.

If the PC, after cleaning, is running fast enough to suit everyone you can ignore this item but if you need to free up some resources, C:\WINDOWS\System32\gsicon.exe is a monitoring tool BT (and probably others) use to track modem status and isn't required. No function lost if it is disabled in msconfig. I'm really not sure how much resource it uses so it may be a non-issue but maybe try with it disabled and see if things work any faster or with fewer errors.

After all the cleaning is done, get an updated version of Hijackthis (v1.98.1 is available) and generate another log to post here.
