My girlfriend bought Grim Fandango last week and the game works and installs great on her computer (Win98). The game was brand new and packaged. I borrowed it to play it on mine...and it refuses to play, install, and sometimes even be read. On the Sony DVD, I can get it to the install screen, but then it will simply not continue. THe computer won't freeze, but when I go to the Task Manager and End Task, it won't. I have to restart the computer every time. I tried to install it from the Yamaha CDRW and it couldn't even be read. In fact, the CD began to spin violently (the case was shaking!) so I hit eject, the tray opens and the CD almost pops out. I reinstalled the drivers for both CD Drives and same thing. So I decided to try other CDs (WinXP Install, another game, and TurboTax) and they all read just fine in both drives. Any one know what is going on? Like I said, the game is original and brand new. Thanks for any advice!

According to the LucasArts site, GF is only supported for Windows ME or older.

You could try running it in Win 98 compatibility mode. It would be best to do the installation in compatibility mode, too. You may have to copy the CD to a folder on your PC and install from there to do this.

Are far as problems reading the CD----no idea. I can't see how this is an XP problem, but it may be.

    Abraxas - you said
Interesting and something I didn't know you could do. I am only familiar with setting compatibility mode once you have an existing shortcut on the desktop.

So how does one install in that mode? Might be a very useful trick at times.

Well, "I'll be durned ", too. I tried this with some programs out of desperation and it seemed to work, but I did not know that installing in CM was actually recommended.

Strangely, a couple of my programs that were running well did not run after SP1. But good, old CM solved those problems, too.

Thanks for the link, Zephyr . Now I have a place to send those people who thought I was off my rocker ;) .
