Help!... I downloaded IE6 to get away from my IE.5....

Then somehow the next time I went online instead of my default yahoo it went to microsft updates...so like an idiot I checked for updates to my WIN98SE that I needed. I downloaded 6 or 7 of them (mostly security stuff), then had to reboot for them to take effect...

    NOW FOR MY PROBLEM....

After reboot the desktop showed up (less all icons) with an explorer error msg box "explorer executed an invalid instruction in module BROWSEUI.DLL at 0167:7116eeed" etc, etc, etc

    Hitting cntrl/alt/del showed NOTHING running!

restarting several times showed the same error msg box at the desktop with no icons. Safe mode did the same thing.

    I reinstalled win98SE several times...same problem!

Then I reinstalled win98SE again, in a different partition/directory (named it win98se instead of windows)

So now I have a desktop showing with full function. All my old stuff is visable and accessable from windows explorer...in fact I had to reinstall my network card and
IE and my verizon DSL in order to get online again...

So now my question is, how do I find out what part of the old registry is corrupt, how do I fix it, and how do I get back to my old windows? All this without paying $75 per hour to a tech!

    Thanks so much.....

    First off.

Which version of SE do you have ?

    Full

    UPGRADE $99 version

    or UPDATE. $20 version

And how did you re-install SE ?

We need to know these things before we can give good answers.

What happened to you should not have. I have re-installed SE several times and wound up with no problems.

    update on details...

    Billy Bob:

It was the 100 upgrade version...

I was on the phone to a friend who walked me through it. If I remember correctly, I had to use the startup disk I made before to initially begin. Then I remember typing "setup" at the a prompt, with maybe an option checked about making the changes with a CD...

did that twice with the same results....

then had to reinstall the 3rd time and name it win98se, which I was told installed it in a different directory or partition...
so now I am able to have a desktop and internet access, all through the old original win98SE cd...

and I can see all my other "good stuff" listed in windows explorer under "windows ".....

    found out this...

the microsoft knowledge base has an article about this (293174), but in order for me to make the "fix ", I have to go BACK to where I was before with a blank desktop & error msg! I tried to delete the reinstallation of win98 which I put on another partition or directory, and it wont delete!....so how do I delete the most recent win98 so that I can make the fix to my old one?

You will not be able delete EITHER windows folder from within windows as they are being used.

What I write form here on MAY NOT apply if you something like a Compaq, Dell, HP machine. They have their own way of doing things.

First off make sure that you have A startup disk. This can be made from any version of Windows 98 by going to the control panel and add/remove.

So what you need to do is either boot to the floppy or Hit F8 at startup and get to the command prompt only

The at the A:\ or C:\ prompt type A:\ = floppy boot. C:\=and F8 boot,

C:\Win98se\command\deltree c:\win98se Then answer Y when it asks.

Then boot rename the original Windows folder back to WINDOWS.

Boot to tho floppy, but the SE CD in and type

    [ CDROM LETTER]:\WIN98\SETUP

    ie D:\WIN98\SETUP.

Then just watch the process and make sure that Windows goes back into the Windows folder.

This should give you and almost clean install but at the same time preserve most of you old setting, programs etc.

    Nothing worked....

    BillyBob:

I had to wait until I made it back to work in order to make a new post, as my system is down (frown)...

I did what you suggested. Deleted my reinstall of WIN98SE to the new/other directory (C:\Win98se\command\deltree c:\win98se). I know this happened as it took awhile and the harddrive was clicking away forever.

Rebooted up, made sure the SE CD install was back to the Windows folder, etc. Everything went fine until the last item in the install. "setting up hardware and finalizing settings" with 12 minutes left. then it froze and hung-up. On the windows install screen it advices if it does that, turn your system off & back on. I did and got an error msg "a fatal exception 06 has occured at 448D:00002024. The current application will be terminated... "

I reinstalled it again several times and got the same error msg, sometimes with the same msg but different numbers...

Then I went thru the procedures from Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 293174 (which was my problem in the first place) and could not finish it. I went to the System.ini file in MSDOS and did the change they recommend (change shell=explorer.exe to shell=progman.exe), restarted as they say and now I get the windows blue screen with logo which changes to a blank blue screen and then locks up.....

what do you suggest I do now?

I am out of ideas as I have not had the problem.

I now have to join you in asking for HELP

It looks like a format and start clean may be in order.

    now i REALLY messed up!

I deleted windows (95?) (ooops!) as well as WIN98se. Now WIN98se wont install as I dont have any authorized OS on my system...

Where can I download or get a copy of 95 or somethiong else so that I am able to install it, then upgrade to WIN98se, then try and correct my original problem?

    thanks...
