My Task Manager Siezes To Work

I got XP right. It ran well for a long time. Then I hooked er up to the web and I know their have been viruses in the past. They are gone now along with all this stupid add ware. I'm worried that the Virus left some damage resulting in losing the ability to use my task manager. Once I open it from pressing ctrl+alt+del it either shows up for .2 of a second or it doesn't show up at all.

I would be extremly happy if I could get some kind of response back from this. I'm sure all of you know how vital a component the task manager is you all being Windows users. I would really like to continue using this machine.
