I installed a 2nd hdd in my Dell Optiplex 760. It is a 1TB sata drive. my other drive is a 160GB sata. The 160 is plugged into Sata) while the 1T is plugged into Sata2. Both drives are on the same power cable and Sata1 has a DVD drive plugged into it. The system does not recognize the !T drive so I was wondering if maybe I need to make a change to the BIOS or change a jumper or something to get it to show up.

    Found this online...

I resolved the issue by removing the factory-installed jumper from the drive unit, since SATAs do not require one to be MASTER and the other one SLAVE. Once I did this, I rebooted the OS and went into BIOS to add the second drive to the boot sequence. After I did that I rebooted so the OS could recognize the drive, then formatted it from RAW to NTFS. It now works as advertised.

What's the GB limit of your Dell?

Is the new drive shown in Disk Management? If so it may require initialising.

I don't think that it has a jumper on it but I will check later today when I have tyime to take the system down. I don't want to format it because it has a newer version of windows installed on it.(it's all legal). This machine has 4GB RAM installed on it now.

The drive doesn't show up anywhere & my SIW/Pro trial ran out today. Isn't there a freeware version of SIW somewhere? It sure would be nice to have.

SIW free is no longer available - Speccy (free) is much better - use the Pirform link.

If there is software on the drive it will not require initialising.

I was referring to the harddrive storage limit of the BIOS.

I have an older MSI XP setup, and the BIOS will not support a drive(s) bigger than 160GB. I know newer systems will support much more than that, but it wouldn't hurt to see what the limits are in the motherboard documentation.

I have not been able to find any limit but I do know that it does accept 1 TB.

It does now. I had to turn the sata port on. Once I did that, it found it and I have already used it to boot in Win 7 Ultimate. Works great. Thanks for all the help again.

When the machine starts to boot, I pressed F12, I then selected setup & drives a screen came up that had boxes checked for sata0 & sata1 but not sata2 so I just checked it. Then I finished the boot & there it was. I can go thru the whole process & document it for you if you need but I would have to reboot the the machine again. Let me know if you need step by step instructions of what I did & I will be glad to do it. Just let me know.

We lost our oldest pug Cookie to cancer on May 01, 2010. The avatar is of our oldest pug Chyna DOB 03-29-2010 she's from Arkansas. We also have a black pug Venus DOB 05-03-2010 she's from Kansas. The breeder was going to put black pug down. For what reason I don't know. I offered the breeder $200.00 and he accepted it stating "two hundred bucks is better than no bucks at all ".

So do I. If I could buy every pug I see I'd have to buy another house just for me to live in.
