Currently use Netscape 4.78. For past two years,
my e-mail account settings and my home page will not be saved. Every other time that I enter or boot up, I have to go in a re-do my e-mail account. Also, my history in location bar is never saved. Have Windows 98 operating system. Have downloaded an updated version of Netscape a year ago, but problem was not fixed. Must be something in the registry.

Any ideas how to correct this situation, short of re-loading my entire Windows 98 system as have been suggested by a few sources.

    Welcome to the Forum, jhocker!

    Hi jhocker,

Whatever you do, don't reload Windows 98 for a Netscape problem. That's never a necessity.

    With Netscape closed:
Open Windows Explorer and browse to
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername\Mail
Delete all files with .snm extensions. Do NOT delete the files with No Extensions.

Start Netscape, and reconfigure your Mail settings. Now close and restart Netscape again, your Mail settings should be retained.

The Location Bar dropdown menu only contains those links that you have typed into the Location bar yourself. Is this to what you refer?

You may need to do some routine maintenance. With Netscape closed:
Browse to your C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername folder. Delete the Cache folder. Netscape will rebuild the folder on the next startup. Also delete the netscape.hst file.

If the above doesn't help then there is one more workaround you can try:

    Close Netscape:
Do a Windows "Find" for nsreg.dat.
    Delete the file.
    Start Netscape
The Profile Manager will prompt you to create a new Profile
Use the exact name you are currently using.
Hopefully your problems will be solved.

Let us know the results, and post back if you have any questions,

    Ramona :D

Tried the first part by deleting .snm files (went to my recycle bin. Should I delete those again from the recyle bin)? Went back in and re-set my e-mail settings, and did a re-boot, my e-mail setttings were not there. Put them in again.

The location bar does not save any files, whether I type them in or not.

I will try your other suggestions and let you know. Thanks. :( :(

    Hi jhocker,

Yes, it's safe to empty your Recycle Bin, and get rid of the .snm files.

Hope that rebuilding the Netscape Registry will work for you. (Deleting nsreg.dat)

    jhocker,

I believe what we have here is a damaged prefs.js file. See if this helps:

    Close Netscape:
Find the prefs.js file, located in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\yourusername. Rename the prefs.js file to prefs.old.

When you restart Communicator a new prefs.js file will be created. You'll need to re-enter your email preferences as well as any other preference settings you have.

Let us know if this solves your problems.

    ..Just not working...

Tried everything, still not working. Last item was to change the prefs.j to prefs.old. Same problem.
