My DVD-RW DL drive is not working properly, it reports to be a CD drive as soon as you insert a DVD disk and I am unable to write to it. After I remove the DVD, the drive changes back to DVD-RAM drive. If you insert a CD-R in the drive it is working fine.

This started today, before that, I was able to make DVD Movies.
I uninstalled it in device manager and rebooted, but no luck.

    Any ideas? Any help?

First, if your running XP and also a third party software package, such as Nero, disable the XP burner. Also, as a note, XP will not burn DVDs.

Don't know what software you are using to burn with but I use Nero 6 and when selecting the destination drive there is the option with my Memorex DVD DL to see it as a DVD burner or a CD burner. Make sure you are selecting it as DVD.

I am running XP and did not know that xp will not burn DVD’s. I have NERO 6.6 and can use that. How do I disable xp’s burner?
Where do I select DVD "“ CD burner in NERO?

Someone else will have to guide you on disableing the XP burning as I don't run XP. I just know that it can cause conflicts with third party burning software.

From Nero Smart Start select Nero Express. In the wizards you will see pull down menus for source, destination, and such. This is where you would choose.

As a note, even though it allows it, I would not 'burn on the fly'. In other words, directly from one CD/DVD to another. More reliable to allow it to make an image.

    SVEN,
Right-click on the CD-RW drive in My Computer and select Properties. Under the Recording tab, clear the check box next to "Enable CD recording on this drive." Click OK.
    Or:

    1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and click Windows Explorer.
    2. Right click your CD burner within Windows Explorer and click Properties.
    3. From the Properties window, select the Recording tab.
    4. Clear the check box beside the option to Enable CD recording on this drive.
    5. Click OK.

Now I tried to make a new movie and when it starts to burn it, I get the following error:

“The procedure entry point ioctlsocket could not be located in the dynamic link library wsock32.dllâ€

after I click on O.K., the program( NERO 6.6) closes.

Can I replace this file without reinstalling Win XP? Where is it Located on the CD, or is that a file from NERO?

    Help!!!

irdreed, that link does not have drivers for Win XP.
    Panic, panic!! :D
I would be VERY hesitatant to install 95,98 or ME ASPI drivers on Win XP. Might result in a reinstall of Windows.

Sven, have you changed the brand of media (disks)? Even...have you bought a different batch of the same brand of disks? The media can vary from batch to batch. You may have a bad batch, or, the previous batch may have been higher quality than normal. Now your drive does not like them. EDIT: Go to the webpage for your DVD drive (go to the manufacturer's website, it will be under "Products" or "Support" for your model), there should be a recommendation for the "preferred" brand of media.

    Try reinstalling Nero over itself.
Do a search in Microsoft Knowledgebase for wsock32.dll.
    http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1

    Dll Help database:
    http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/

Find out how to upgrade the version of that file.

mattman, Thanks....I forgot he has XP. Here's the link from Adaptec for all except Win95.

    http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/su...cat=/Product/ASPI-4.70&filekey=aspi_471a2.exe

BTW I wouldn't install Nero over itself. It may or may not work.....(the same problem could still be there.) I'd suggest if a reinstall is necessary to first uninstall Nero then use the Nero "Clean Tools" which will clean out all of Nero Filesand then do a reinstall.

    Nero Clean Tools here:

    Hi Irdreed and mattman

As suggested, I completely uninstalled Nero and reinstalled it with no change. Then I went to the Nero website and downloaded the wnaspi32.dll file for XP and placed it in the Nero folder as described. The result is the same. I can back up my hard drive with no problem and if I don’t use compression, it is readily accessible by explorer and any related programs that the files where created with. So my drive works.
The problem is in" Nero Vision Expressâ€. It will go through all the steps it needs to burn a movie I just assembled out of several cuts, and then when it starts to burn, I get the error.
“Loader Error" in the upper left corner and below
“The procedure entry point ioctlsocket could not be located in the dynamic link library wsock32.dll" After I click on OK, Nero closes.

At MS I found that this file is included in service pack 2.
Q: is there a way to just extract that file and place it in my directory?

Maybe this file got corrupted somehow.
I did some MS recommended updates and after that it started.
The updates where MS AntiSpyware and some security updates for office.

    Any help would be appreciated
    Sven

BTW, I think this is no longer a hardware problem, but a software / windows XP problem or Nero Problem. Feel free to move the whole thing to a more appropriate location.

    SVEN,
I’d like to regroup here to see where we stand:
1.)It appears you are using Nero Vision Express to Burn a DVD. Correct?

2.)The DVD Media being used seems to be a DVD-RW. Correct?

3.)Did you follow the Uninstall procedure I recommended in my Post #10? (Uninstall Nero then Download & Install Nero Clean Tools and Run etc)

4.)After reinstall of Nero per my recommendations above, did you download and install the Adaptec ASPI Drivers?

5.)Do a Search on your Win XP and see if you have a File ASPICHK.EXE. (After step 4 above; it should be there.)

6.)Do you have just a DVD Recorder unit installed? Or do you have a CD ROM or CD/RW and a DVD/RW Installed?

If two units are installed then, under Nero "Which Recorder Would you like to use? You should be able to see selection for the CD/RW (CD-R/RW) and for the DVD/RW (DVD) or (CD-R/RW).

    You mentioned:
I searched my Win XP SP-2 CD and could not find the file, so I’m not sure what to say there.

There’s many Tutorials for Vision Express listed on the Nero Website that might help:

    Hi Irdreed.

    1) Yes, I am using Nero 6.66 to be exact.
    2) The media is DVD-R and DVD+R DL.
    3) Yes I uninstalled with nero clean tools and reinstalled.
    4) I downloaded the file you mentioned from Nero for Win XP (wnasapi32.dll) It was the third choice on the page that you linked to. I also downloaded aspi_471a.exe from the other site you linked to, but did not install because I fount the file from Nero.
    6) I have a DL DVD burner that will also burn CD’s
All Formats (+R/-R/RW and DL, for CD "“R and RW)

I have a second drive installed, but it is only a DVD Reader.
Nero sees both Drives, but of cause I can only write to the DVD writer.

About Service pack 2, I did a double click on it and it started to extract all files, but when I cancelled the operation, hoping to find the file, it deleted all of it except the temp directory.
I did that because I already have SP2 installed ad did not want to mess with it.

About the tutorials, I know how to edit and capture and all that, and it all is working fine, but when I hit Burn, and Nero is going prepair the files and menus, after all the preliminary things and the actual burn process starts, that is when I get the message:
“The procedure entry point ioctlsocket could not be located in the dynamic link library wsock32.dllâ€

To me it sounds like there is something wrong with that file.

    Thanks for helping.
    Sven

I’ve exhausted my research on this, sorry to say.

Maybe someone else can jump in here with a possible solution.

    Thanks for trying.

I am tempted to Ghost my drive. Problem is the image is 3 month old and I have to rebuild some things. I can do that, but it takes time.

    Thanks again

Just as an off shot... If you installed the DVDRW on a line that the CDROM was already on I would guess that the origional CD was set to master. If that was the case try changeing the CD to slave and the DVDRW to master. If you mounted it on the same cable as the hard drive take it off and put both on the secondary IDE with the DVDRW as master and the CDROM as slave.

Don't really think the above is going to help but would be the best setup anyway.

    Jaylach,

When I purchased my PC it had a DVD reader and a CD writer in it. 2 drives. I then replaced the CD writer with a DVD writer and kept the DVD reader where it was. The 2 optical drives are on the same cable. It has worked before, and I think 1 of my security updates where messing with my wsock32.dll file.

How about doing a repair install of windows, would that solve the problem? At least I will not have to rebuild my hard drive.

I also will send e-mail to Nero, maybe they have a solution.

Thanks all of you for your help.

There are some people here that will disagree with me on this but after reseating everything, checking ram, etc., I have never hesitated to do a reinstall of windows on a machine. I've done this with win 98, 2000, and once with XP durring the short time I ran XP. I WILL say that it did not always cure the problem but will add that it never hurt or caused further problems.

I won't and can't say that a reinstall of windows will help but if done properly I can't see how it can hurt you.

    Jaylach,

I tend to agree, I have installed 98 several times on my PC, however it could be a pain if you have to call MS all the time to get it reactivated. A repair install is easier because you can copy the wpa file back to the hard drive and be done. I will wait if Nero has a solution. If not I will install win again
