Over a year ago I bought a pre-owned PC with Windows XP and I know that the previous owner was not a user of pirated software.

Two days ago I suddenly had a message to say that I might be using counterfeit software and the screen background changed to black. On the net I have seen that Windows XP can suddenly, and for no apparent reason, decide that the CoA is not valid and the software fails validation.

I tried to roll back to a previous restore point, but that did not work. I have the CoA for XP Pro and another CoA for Microsoft Office. I am not really bothered about the other software as it is mostly stuff that is old and can be replaced. I have no data that I must save on the PC. I use it mainly to enable me to use legacy peripherals for which there are no current drivers.

Unfortunately I do not have any restore disk, but I do have a copy of XP that I could reload, but the CoA is not available. I have seen on the web various suggested methods for sorting this problem out, but they will cost. Since this appears to be a known problem with Windows XP failing to validate, does Microsoft have a 'Fix It', or if not, can I have a step by step suggestion as to how this can remedied.

Another question is this. Could I reload a fresh copy of XP and use the CoA from my installation that has suddenly decided that it is not genuine?

Hi, Why not "phone home ". Make a call to MS UK and see if they can help. You have the COA - they should be able to validate legitimate COA's. Neil.

I have since found out that the Windows XP Professional 32-bit was installed on 21 May 2008 so why it has taken so long for it to become 'counterfeit' is anybody's guess. I hope you can diagnose the problem from the above data.

    Many thanks in advance.

I went on to the web and filled in all their questionnaire and submitted it. Then after the page had disappeared irrevocably, I was asked to print it and send hard copy to Ireland.

I also had a chat with a Microsoft employee who I thought was a techie, but he was not and was finally no help at all. He did not believe there was any software that could search for a 25 character product ID. This PC (the actual one in question) was put together by a DIY geek and so there is no OEM installation code, that I was asked by said MS person to submit and I had to go to the PC manufacturer for remedy! I do of course have the product ID, but no CoA as the PC was pre-owned and I took the word of the seller that the software was genuine. The fact that he operated it since 21/05/2008 must say something for that fact.

Anyway Arie is now presumably looking at the diagnostic and I await his `words of wisdom'. Thanks for your ideas that I did try.

Says it all. It's been installed with a publicly shared Volume License Key (a VLK is only for business use, not retail).

See this Google Search for your partial key.

Thanks Arie. I have not known about this before, I can assure you. I will load Ubuntu 12.04 instead and maybe that software can operate my legacy peripherals. I am surprised that it has taken so long for it to fail validation. I will not be buying XP again. All my current OS software I have bought and installed myself.

    Addendum

    Arie,

I have just decided to buy a copy of Win XP Pro and will change the product key in the registry. Would you go along with this?

I don't have to go along with it, Microsoft needs to in order for your OS to be validated & fully functional.

See this Microsoft support article: How to change the Volume Licensing product key on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 1 and later versions of Windows XP

It depends on what media was used to install XP on your computer. I would think that you now have bought an OEM or Retail copy of XP Pro.

You'll have to try & see if it works.

The key you have: V2C47-MK7JD-3R89F-D2KXW-VPK3J.... Was blacklisted by MS about 5+ years ago.

Yes, I found that out. And the copy I bought was also pirated, found the Product ID on the web as well, but I got an instant refund when I reported the fact to the seller. I suppose it will be quite difficult to get a virgin copy of XP at this time, so close to the end date! I have been offered a gratis copy, and I live in hope! But I'm not holding my breath!

Still no gratis copy of Windows XP Pro.. I have loaded Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and will use that when I go on line with the PC. I have a copy of a Dell Windows XP Pro(Re-install disk) that was on an old laptop of mine that died and has been scrapped. I could not uninstall it and only kept the HDD and the disk.

Would Microsoft allow me to use the Product ID, for a small fee of course, as I doubt that it is possible to buy one that would validate after this length of time?

A Dell OS cd will only work on a pc with a Dell Bios.

A Dell key code might maybe work with an OEM XP cd... But we're getting in to "NO NO against the rules here" territory.

I do not need to reload the OS, merely to find a Product ID that will validate and stop the reminders. I know how to change the Product ID in the registry. See above post by Arie.

I think that if someone buys a copy of an OS and it is licensed for ONE PC at a time, it is not right that if the PC breaks down, and many M/Bs do pack in, then one should be forbidden to use the OS on another PC. I do not see that the actual copy of the software should make a difference, after all Dell may put some extra drivers and bloatware into their copy but the basic OS will be the same. Furthermore, Microsoft could get a few more quid out of me by allowing me to re-licence the software, but now they will get zip, because I will use Ubuntu.

My copy of XP Pro continues to work, it just keeps reminding me that it is counterfeit! In fact I can get rid as the legacy periherals that I kept it for are adequately serviced by Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I know that Microsoft will not miss my meagre contribution to Bill's retirement fund.

For what it's worth, my copy of XP Home (with SP1) came off of an old expired Dell laptop, but that was before Microsoft's OEM deadline of late 2004 ~ 2005. I have since made a copy of my brother's Dell XP Home with SP2 for reinstallation purposes, but with the same key that came off the expired laptop.

Both of these disks have worked fine on my old custom-built XP PC.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think that I will in this case just use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I have a couple of useful books on Ubuntu Linux so will start swotting it up.

I shall give up trying to use a product ID changer program as I can't find an ID that will validate. I shall mark this thread resolved.
