Have been running 2 40 gig WD hard drives on win2K for a while with NO problems...decided to upgraded the dedicated video HD to a 80 gig...simply replaced the 40 with the 80 with correct jumper...when boot up the BIOS correctly recognizes all devices correctly as does device manager but new 80 gig drive does not show up in "My Computer" so I can format it...Any ideas???

    Go into Disk Management.

    New HD

I had that exact same problem with a Western Digital 80GB HD Caviar on a Celeron station.

My fix was to install new drivers by installing an accelerator program from Western Digital to fix it.

Note: the Disk Management of the Computer Management MMC recognized it, but would not properly format it and would seem to find disk errors when there was none.

    I hope that helps.

Same problem with XP. Neither "My Computer" nor "Windows Explorer" recognize my new WD 120 USB h/d. The drive works perfectly. I can read and write to it. Went to Disk Management, the drive is formatted, but still no recognition.

Solved the new h/d non-recognition problem:

Open Tweakui | My Computer | Drives. There you will find a list of drive letters A-Z, with boxes indicating drive letters already assigned, drive letters available, and drive letters blocked. Check mark your new drive letter, click apply, click ok, voila the new drive is now recognized in both "My Computer" and in "Windows Explorer ".

TweakUI is a handy powertoy with a lot more options and features than what's listed.
