I was having difficulty with my internet access. So, I used my cable modem access' Medic thing (Road Runner Medic) and tested my computer. It said I don't have a CD-ROM!!!!

I tried putting a game in the drive and it did not pop up ready to play.

I am suspecting that I have a virus or something.....

My computer is a Dell. Not sure of all the specifics.....

I know I have Windows 98. My dad installed more memory around December 2001. I know I have 352 MB of memory.

I called my dad and he says he knows nothing about computers.

I think the 3 year warranty thing is up with Dell really soon...or it might have already expired.

    I am at a loss......

    :(

Can anyone help me? Please? This is my primary computer and the only one with Internet in my house, as I have cable internet access.

Looks like this one slipped through the cracks.

Since you suspect a virus, do you have an anti-virus program on the machine with up-to-date virus definitions? If so, run a thorough scan, checking all files, not just "program" files.

First thing to check other than a virus: hit the Windows logo key and then Pause/Break (or double click My Computer and select Properties). This opens the System Properties window. Click on the Device Manager, and the [+] next to CDROM.

This should open up a line identifying your CDROM drive. If it's not listed, it could get interesting.

If your drive is listed, look for a red X or a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. These are error flags.

If either one appears, click the line once to highlight it and then click Properties. In that window, see if it gives an explanation for the error.

This will do for starters. Let us now what you find.

Problem was resolved a few days ago

actually, this problem has been resolved. I wanted to edit my original post's title, but was unable to do so.

I was able to resolve it by asking at the Dell Forum @ Dell.com

It was just some Intel Storage update that I had downloaded that acted like a virus. I uninstalled those and its been fixed.
