Right click on the desktop; point your cursor at new, and then briefcase.

If you simply have no briefcase on your desktop, then Zander's suggestion should do the job.

If the icon is missing and the briefcase is indicated by the "unassociated" icon instead, then--->

There is an error in one X-Setup plugin for changing to the metal briefcase that may have caused the problem. The plugin is selected by X-Setup for XP even though it only works on ME or lower where syncui.dll is located in the System folder (System32 in XP).

    Run: regedt32

    Navigate to:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{85BBD920-42A0-1069-A2E4-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon

    The "Value" field should read:
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SYNCUI.DLL,1
    or
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SYNCUI.DLL,0

A reboot will probably be necessary. Then, recheck the value.

An alternative, of course, is to edit the VB code in the plugin.
Just select the plugin in X-Setup, right-click it, and choose "Edit ". You really don't need to know anything about VB; just change where it says "System" to "System32" anywhere the folder is referenced and save it.
