    Installing XP Professional

Basically, when copying the files to the partition i get an error on several files saying "could not copy file ____.___ press enter to ..... etc" So I co-operate, I press enter and the copying goes on ... This happens on several files usually, most of the time they're different files from the previous set. I reach the 'installing windows' phase and after a few minutes the system restarts, all going ok so far. The installation continues and the green loading bar appears stating "installing new device drivers ", as the bar reachs half way (give or take) system restarts. This time on startup before the installation process is restarted, a black screen. Nothing else, just a black screen which doesn't show any signs of progressing. The only way to escape it, pressing the reset button which will follow the same trend when the system restarts. I've tried restarting the installation process several times, repartitioning a couple of times and the same result crops up.

This is an almost brand new system put together myself, a self-tagged beginner ! I've had Xp running already after a very frustrating few days which was giving the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD during installation. I was advised to change my RAM which I did and managed to get XP installed. This proved to be false hope however, as I was sill getting the same BSOD and frequent restarts when using the computer. I did take the newer RAM stick from another computer getting the same error however which may seem rather odd but doing this meant i could check wether it was actually the RAM causing the problem in the other computer and if it wasn't then I could atleast get the OS installed on the new computer. I now have a brand new 3rd RAM stick replacing the 2nd which was giving the errors which is

    KINGSTON ValueRam/1GB 667MHz DDR2 NON ECC CL5

For some bizarre reason i decided to start right from the begining again as during the installation of XP with the second RAM stick i was getting the error which occurred when some files couldn't be copied. I thought this could cause problems in the future and hoped that the process would run smoothly this time with my nice new peice of RAM, how wrong I was.

So this is were I am now, hoping someone has the key to unlock this big door I've been banging my head off for the last 2 weeks. If it's not clear what the hell is going on, i'll try and rephrase some of it, im not really known for my story telling

    Thanks for taking a look

Two separate problems maybe - the RAM stick you posted looks to be OK for your mobo according to the Kingston Memory selector ....

    http://www.kingston.com/

Are the other memory modules compatible - you can't just install any old memory, it has to be exactly right.

If you skip file copy when installing XP or any program for that matter you can hardly expect it to run with missing files. So ....

Are you installing from a genuine retail XP CD or from an (illegal) burnt copy?

If the CD is genuine retail is it damaged, marked or dirty? If not the problem may lie with your CD-ROM drive.

    The First Memory Module was:
    512MB Kingston PC4200 DIMM 533Mhz CL4

I bought it from e-bay at an unusually low price from a seller in Asia, I just presumed that it was faulty when i began getting the errors because of this. I'm not sure of the second module and I'm at currently not at the location where the PC is as I had to get access to the internet .. no working system there at the minute. They both have been removed now anyway .. could they have damaged the mobo while they were in use if they were faulty/incompatible ?

The XP is retail and has minor surface scratches, nothing noticable unless closely inspected.

I only have a basic CD-ROM drive installed at the minute, i will look to add a new one asap and try installing via that.

    Thanks for the advice
