I have been playing with Unix a little bit.

There, it's common to put different things in different jars - i.e. one can opt to set up separate partitions for all the following

    - boot
    - main OS files
    - non-OS applications
    - temporary junk, like browser cache, temp files etc.
    - user data
    - swap file (this is the only MUST HAVE).

I am considering migrating from Win98 to Win2K.

Would it be advisable to set up separate partitions as follows?

    - Windows (is 1 GB enuf?)

    - Program Files (800 MB would be plenty for me)

    - Swap (I only have 96Mb of RAM, and my WIN386.SWP never gets over 250 MB, but with 2K how big can it get?)

    - Junk (say 50 MB, all the tiny and numerous Internet Temporary Files and similar junk, so the smaller the cluster size is the better)

    - User data = all the rest.

    What do you think?

    TIA!

Take it from someone that has 6 partitions. More is NOT better. I just get confused as to where everything is. I have a new machine on order and when it gets here I plan on having 4 partitions.
    1: OS- 2GB
2: Program files, data, etc.- 20 GB
    3: MP3s, downloads- 16 GB
4: Back up image of OS partition- 2GB

Some of it is personal preferences, on how you want to organize your data. My personal preferences is 2 partitions.

when you do make a windows partition I would not make anything smaller then 4 gig for it. We had some pc's with 2 gig and ran in to problems with running out of space. So if you do partition the way you want it, don't use anything less than 4 gig for os partition, thats my advice.

    Good Luck
