A while back my ethernet jack on the back of my tower went bad.Took the computer to the shop and they replaced it with another one right below the bad one. New jack works great, but now all of a sudden when booting up, windows seems to detect something and wants to install an ethernet nic when I have one installed and is working correctly. If I install it like it asks, then it installs it and brings up and icon with the red-x through it in the clock area which says-A network cable has been unplugged.

Windows has never asked to install one since the new ethernet jack was put in, just started recently, and I might add, it also installs a different driver with it.(I either have to let it install and keep it or if I uninstall it then on every boot, it wants to install it again. Very annoying)

Is there way in the BIOS to keep windows from detecting whatever it is wanting to install, or a setting anywhere I can change or is there something else I can do to keep it from wanting to install a second ethernet adapter driver etc? Is there a registry setting I might can change to prevent this annoying thing. It did not do this after they put the new ethernet jack in until now. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Vanilla Ice

I take it you mean I should remove the old ethernet jack or something else from the tower.I can't do that,I don't know how and anyway, the NIC card is intergrated with the MOBO so it can't be removed, the NIC card works fine, it is the old ethernet jack, versus the new ethenet jack in the tower.

I have 2 entries under network adapters in the Device Manager, one works and one does NOT.Not working one is the cable unplugged one = red x icon in the tray area that keeps showing up. If I remove the not working one, on next bootup, windows just asks to intall it again.

Thanks for trying to help, maybe I have confused you, but I can't explain it any better. I will just take it back to the computer shop and have them fix the problem.Thanks,anyhow.

Disable the non working NIC in Device Manager - if you simply remove/uninstall it Windows will redetect it on every boot - as you know :)

Or see if you can disable it in your BIOS. Most newer BIOS let you do this.

Thanks for all the suggestions.Actually, I found a solution on thw web for "hiding uknown devices and\or other annoying non working devices." It is a simple registry hack, but was easy to follow and so I used it to hide it.

While the NIC is still in Device Manager,it is now hid and I can only see it if I check "Show hidden Devices ". It also removed the connection for that particular NIC from the network connections folder and removed the annoying tray icon with the "red-X ". It all worked out with the registry hack.
