I've tried to investigate this but I'm failing to find the correct search words.
    I'm running XP home.
My system freezes periodically when I click on links in email. Outlook freezes and I cannot get onto the internet.
When I look in the Task Mgr, I find multiple copies of IEXPLORE.EXE listed, even if there are no open IE sessions. If I delete the IE processes, the system will "unfreeze" and all is well.

What is causing these IE sessions not to end? Any suggestions for search parameters will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

Hi SusanG and welcome. Sorry this thread took so long to get a response for you.

This sounds like a problem with spyware/malware so the first step will be to see how you stand on that. I'll be moving the thread to the security section when I finish this reply.

Look in Quicklinks in my signature and use links there to do the following:

    - download, immediately update, and run Ad-aware. Check the box for a full scan. Let it remove all items it finds.

    - same for Spybot but you only need to remove the items it pre-checks for you. The others are harmless.

    - download Hijackthis. Extract it to a folder of it's own so maybe c:\hjt or c:\anti-spyware or something. Do not put it in a temp folder or directly on the desktop.

Once you have Hijackthis on your drive (no install needed) run it and click the button to run a scan. Then click the button to save a log file and when it finishes, you will have a copy of the log opened in notepad. Select the entire contents and post that in a reply to this thread. We'll tell you how to proceed from there.

Thanks for the welcome and help! I was out of town last week - hense the delay.

I run SpySweeper every day, so I ran it and found 1 item
    Adaway found 5 cookies
    Spybot found 41 tracking cookies
    All were removed.

Looks pretty clean. You do need to get the latest version of HJT though and run another scan to create a log. There may be some stuff v1.97 misses that v1.98.2 finds.

Make sure you have the latest version of Weatherbug since there are XP issues with several of the earlier ones.

Depending on how you work, you might want to run HJT and let it remove
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cmaudio] RunDll32 cmicnfg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd
System tray control panel for C-Media based soundcards and not needed unless you use it a lot. You can get to the same C-media settings, when needed, from control panel. It basically just chews up system resources for no real benefit to you.

I'll wait for the new HJT log but based on the protection you use and the 1.97 log, it's probably gonna be something else so running
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
is worth doing since it's the closest to an IE repair you can get with XP.

Here's the logfile for the newer HJT.

I ran SFC / scannow and it came up empty.

I'll let you know if it keeps happening.
    Thanks,

Well dang - I was really hoping the new HJT would show something that would be obvious and easy to fix. Ah well. Maybe one of the real security experts will spot something I missed.

SFC runs very quickly and without telling you much of anything. You'd need to check your event logs for details since it does write a detailed event.

For starters I would shut down ALL of Norton except the Anti-Virus.

Especially Norton Protection. But MAKE SURE the Norton protected Recycle Bin is empty first.
