I have a new(ish) PC that my boys use and the sound from all websites is muffled. The PC is running XP Home Edition. The windows sounds, (log off, minimise, maximise, etc) all play at an acceptable level. A CD or DVD also plays OK. It is not a speaker problem as I have tried other speakers, it isn't a website problem as my other PC plays the website audio OK and none of the volume sliders are muted. Does any body have any idea as to what it may be? I have the feeling one of my boys has either checked or unchecked a box somewhere. A friend has suggested re-installing IE7.

    Cheers

Give an example of a Web site where sound plays muffled.

Have a look at settings in:
Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced tab > Multimedia section
(though the sound setting there is for embedded audio in the html code)

The sound in the link you provided won't apply to the settings above because that link is to an embedded Shockwave Flash multimedia file. You may want to go to adobe.com and grab the latest version of the free Flash:

Thanks for the info but every box was already ticked including "play sounds on websites ". This happens on every web site regardless of media type, i.e. radio stations, music downloads, games etc. There is a program called Realtek HD Audio Manager on the PC (it was on when purchased). If I test the speakers via this program, for the few seconds it tests the speakers the sound is as you would expect.

    Cheers
