    Hello all,

I was wondering if someone could fill me in on MTUs Maximum Transmission Units and their purpose and importance when dealing with networks.

Recently I had a problem with my dial up service provider where I couldn't send email, or submit forms online. It ended up being the MTU size that my windows 2000 was sending. So if some could be kind enough to explain how this works, and how it causes problems I would be very appreciative!

    Thanks

The MTU is a cluster of information that is sent form your computer over a network to a receiving computer. If the MTU is too small you cannot send large files or receive large files. Now I know for myself that DSL requires you to have a 1400 to 1500 MTU. Dialup I would assume that it would be 250 to 500 MTU. This MTU will also help download speeds.

When I refer to large files this means 2+MB file for dialup or 50+MB on high speed.

    Hope this info helps

It does, thank you very much!

I downloaded a program called ispeed to optimized both my LAN and dialup connections, seems to be working much for efficiently.

    thanks again :D
