Windows Vista Msn Messenger Will Not Work At All

Hi, Saw an old message regarding this same problem. I am beyond upset and frustrated with having a brand new laptop with Vista and cannot even use it for why I got it in the first place---contacting my friends and family with messenger. I have downloaded it it worked for about a day then now everytime I sign on without even doing anything it comes up saying it's encountered a problem and shuts down. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it three times same thing keeps happening
Is this just because it's not compatible with crappy vista? Or could there be something else wrong?
PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS OR A WAY AROUND THIS!

No I don't have a Service 1 Pack installed what is this and how do I get it?

 

Alright thanks a million for the insight cuz I was ready to throw my new laptop across the room because of this
