MSN Messenger hangs

    For some time my MSN Messenger has failed to start properly. It starts up and I get the "signing in" message which clears after a second or two, then just a blank window.
    Since this problem started I have upgraded from XP Home to XP Professional. Installed service pack 2 and just installed beta of Messenger 7.
    Problem still persists.
    All thoughts gratefully received
