I installed MSN Instant Messenger 6.0, and my shutdown times went from 5 to 8 seconds up to 50 to 60 Seconds. I am running Windows 2000, SP 2, with MS03-026, Black ICE, and NAV with 8/20/03 definitions...

Can anyone shed some light on why the "saving your settings" process would now take so long?

I backed it (MSN IM) off by doing a restore to a previous immage with Drive Image, which was made immediately before the MSN IM install, and the shutdown times are back in the 5 second range..... so I am pretty certain it is the culprit.

I would like to use the Instant Messenger, but I get real insecure when a process takes so much time..... what is it *really* doing, anyway?

    Thanks.

Not much interest in this thread, I guess ....Is this shutdown duration considered normal? Or, is Windows 2k "Phoning Home" with some kind of Spy Ware? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Only suggestion I have is to install SP4. Maybe a fix in the SP for this or an unrelated bug causing this result.

As for spyware, maybe not, but worth installing Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. These two proggys used together will keep your system fairly clean of spyware though. Remember to imediately update both before running after the install and run the update at least weekly.

Thanks Paul. I have just installed SpyBot, and have an older version of Ad-Aware, which I will update. Amazing what gets "planted" on one's machine! Not that I am paranoid, or anything, but is Spybot on the up and up? Would seem like this guy has an incredible knowledge of the inner workings of Windows. Who is watching him? Thanks!
