    Need info on MSN 9.
They offer Macaffe firewall. I have been told that the firewall only exist on MSN's server. I find it hard to believe a P.C. can benefit from a firewall that is installed only on your ISP's server.
Am I wrong on this matter. A search for info on this subject, returned no results.

    Hello twecker,

I run MSN9, just installed it. Its a McAfee AV that's running on the Server. Haven't seen anything about a Firewall.

It is plausable in the sense that Servers are firewalled and that does benifit the individual user. AFAIK, that kind of firewalling is not new.

Can you point to the dicumentation?

    Regards - Charles

Here is the link I found:

    http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-us...n.com/?page=misc/specialoffers&pgmarket=en-us

Hope that works. I know servers have firewalls, but the user doesnt have control of them as they would with one installed on their computer.
My intrest is because, I know someone that is that is using XP SP2's firewall. She told me about the one MSN is offering. 'She has MSN 9' If that is true, I would rather she used Macaffe, then SP2's..................

You still run an AV software on your system?

    Hi twecker,

Ok, the reason I didn't see this is because its part of the "Premium" service. I upgraded to 9 at MSN's instistence and I have the basic.

You still run an AV software on your system?

Yes, I do. What the McAfee's Av does is filter e-mails. That leaves checking HD I/O's to my AV - meaning reads/writes/opens and so on.

I would rather she used Macaffe, then SP2's..................

The two shouldn't be mutually exclusive. Running XP's doesn't take that much resources.

I'm going to take time to look into this - intrigued by it.

The problem w/SP2's FW and probably McAfee's, speculation on my part at the moment, is it's inbound only nature. The reason I run third party FW's is to have outbound control - deny processes connecting, plus having rule making options - constraining apps to ports/IP's, blocking IP's and ports.

    Regards - Charles

I have just notice that my ISP "Comcast" is offering McAfe firewall for one year to all its customers, free. Looks like it's the full version, with automatic updates. To bad, I just purchased Nortons PF. Been quite happy with norton. Think I might have her install McAfe, Im interested also. McAfe free for a year is a great deal............I let you know how it turns out.
    Thanks for the replies...

If that's the case, that is the full blown firewall on the system itself; by all means, have your friend install it.
