My friend is running Windows 98 and was using Netscape as his browser and email program.

He decided that he would rather use Internet Explorer in the future along with Outlook Express.

We opened the Internet Explorer with no problems but when we went to open Mail, Read Mail, the Outlook Express window came up but stopped with the following error message: The title bar said: Msimn and the text was "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. "

We did go on Microsoft's site and followed the instructions they gave us to fix this problem but it Outlook will not open.

    Microsoft's Fix Problem was:
    1. Rename the Telephon.ini file (if it exists) in the Windows folder (IT DID) to Telephon.old.
    2. Restart your computer.
    3. Double-click the Tapiini.exe file in the Windows\System folder.
Note that this program runs very quickly; nothing may appear to happen.
If you are not sure, check the Windows folder to verify that a Telephon.ini file was created.
    ----------
Any other suggestions for getting Outlook Express to open will be appreciated.

    Msimn errors are caused by many factors. I don't know why you are using this particular fix. The correct fix will be based on what is revealed by clicking on the details button when this error happens. {msimn is only one part of at least a duo creating this error. It takes at least two files to cause this. We need the other bad guy.}

In the mean time you could try looking through some of the past posts, both "the causes" and the "fixes ":

    search

Make sure the keyword filters are msimn and error and the IE forum is selected. This should give you about 15 posts to read and sublinks to help pinpoint problem and fix. Something may sound familar or ring a bell.

Do you have the same version of IE and OE installed? It is possible to update IE and not do OE, do some critical updates and end up with a case of versionitis, causing illegal operations.
I would suggest either running the IE Repair Tool, or reinstall IE and make sure OE is installed along with it by selecting Custom Install.

Hi, I just got back from vacation so I am finally trying to resolve my friend's problem.
Yes he has the same version of OE and IE. He sent me this part of the error message:
MSIMN caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000=0000000F.
    Registers:
Loads of numbers here I did not think you would want.
    Bytes at C5:EiP:
    loads of numbers
    Stack dump
    loads of numbers
    Contact program vendor.
I'm not sure if this is enough to figure out the problem.

I will go over and try to run the OE repair tool. I'm not sure but is it in "Add/Remove Programs?" If possible, how can I re-install IE and OE? I don't have it on CD.

I didn't find any help in the search section for msimm and error that I thought we should try.

Thank you again for your help.
