    I have clicked the restart MSIE and am moved to MSIE/and a web page. (No help) Sometimes a freeze-up.
    I have gone to Control Panel/Add-Remove/check for IE6 errors, and repair. Still no help.

    Post it!

    Also, do you have a file named Pdm.dll on your system? If so, what version is it?

    Hi Brett,
    I do not have a Pdm.dll file. (That I can locate.) The "tons and tons" refer to that supplied under 'tech info' along with the error message.
    (Module 1 - 49, Thread 2 - 11 and memory 1 - 13. (Real technical information. willieboye

    Hi willieboye
    I'm not sure I follow. Is this just the Microsoft internet reporting tool? And if so/not.......is this an error that you can recreate over and over?

    IE errors in module unknown can be caused by spyware and sometimes viruses.
    Download and run AdAware to check for the former, and update your virus defintions and do a full virus scan.

    Hi Daizy. I am not sure if this is an MS Internet tool. It just arrives all by itself and is a window about 2x4. Strangely, since I posted, this event hasn't happened again. (Before, it was popping up every day for over a month.)

    Hi WhitPhil. I have installed Adware, now I have to determine just exactly what I have that is questionable. Many of the items are just a muddle to me. I have done a complete Virus scan and the computer is "clean ".

    Thank you both for your input. It helps a lot. willlieboye

    If Ad-Aware locates it, you are dealing with spyware.

    With only a couple of exceptions, you can (and IMO should) remove all traces of any it finds. I think go-zilla requires some file that flags as spyware and maybe a couple of others.

    However, most of it is just sneaky stuff that is doing things and sending information about your system to a site(s) on the net.

    For myself, I won't use an app that requires spyware assistance to work. But that is a personal quirk.

    I must say that I've never been entirely convinced that it was proper for Lavasoft to tag the Alexa components IE as "spyware ".

    MSIE problem

    Newt & Brett. I see that you agree that I should get rid of all the suspicious files as per ADWARE. This I was wondering about not knowing what most of those files were for.
    After telling Daizy that the error had gone, I clicked out of IE and into OE to read my e-mails and up pops the error message and I am shfted back to IE and the Yahoo page. Thank you!!!

    Same IE problem

    Hi Everybody:

    I am having the same problems with IE. It won't start no matter what. I had to use Navigator to post this. I tried the IE repair tool. I tried adware. I removed IE 6 and went back to IE 5. I tried to remove IE 5 to start over but it doesn't show up on the add/remove list but it is still on my system. I tried patches and updates and virus check. Still no luck. Any suggestions.

    Thanks

    In a nutshell:

    IE and a module Unknown [could be device, driver or software application] have come to blows and IE lost. Both can not be run at the same time.

    Tracking down the "Unknown" may not be easy. You'll need to elimate the possibilities until you find the root cause. You need to make sure your hardware devices and software applications are compatible, correct and up to date with most current drivers or patches. You need to be sure a Virus or Trojan isn't lurking around.You need to eliminate as many of the startup applications and background running tasks that are not absolutely necessary. You may wish to run Lava Soft's "Ad-aware" cleanup tool.

    A link with good sublinks including the Ad-aware link:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1423&highlight=module+unknown

    A past post with useful startup elimination information:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3403&highlight=startup
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1087&highlight=startup

    ====Reinforcement sublinks from the above^=====

    MS hopefull-helpfuls:
    http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...microsoft.com/support/IE/ie5/topics/IEIPF.asp

    =============
    Just a personal opinion but as a Beginner, it may be more helpful to view these errors in a more traditional manner rather than through a debugger popup or Microsoft's Error report tool:

    If you are using Microsoft's Error Report tool...............
    I think this link includes info on how to disable [or at least interpret what you get]:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;ES-ES;q276550

    Also while on the same subject..........
    In IE's menubar>tool> IE options>Advanced tab>Browsing category>check disable script debugger and UNcheck display a notificaton about every script error

    And as for windows in general......
    Enable or make sure you have enabled a "Faultlog ":
    What is a Faultlog.txt?
    There's a file in the *\Windows folder called "Faultlog.txt ". Whenever Windows gives you a fault message, detailed information about the fault is appended to this file. It's useful to look at this file to see the history of problems a computer has been having, and also to find and copy error messages to paste into Microsoft's Knowledge Base search engine [or your friendly neighborhood BBS].

    Latest Tweakui will make the enableing of this painless:
    http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/tweakui2000.shtml

    *NOTE*The box for enable/disable of Faultlog.txt is on the "Paranoia Tab" near the bottom.

    =======
    Doing the above will generally give you an error that is a bit more easi;ly understood. You may still not know the cause but the posting of such an error or the researching of said same on a search engine such a www.google.net will produce a better understanding and in many cases [with fingers crossed] the fix.

    ######################
    May be helpful to know, if you can recall what the last thing you installed may have been. Could have been a new applicaton, an update [either security or otherwise]. Any feeling or suspicion on what may have caused this? What were you doing just prior to error.

    Any other problems or odd behaviors?

    Also there are other areas that can be explored that may cause this such as Favorites or desktop issues but I can't cover them all or this will become a Novel. Some of the more general things I have suggested may help without going into the less common knit-picky, besides one of the links or sublinks supplied, already, may offer a specific software issue that may apply to you. Will wait for an update.....

    Others who may have experienced this exact error may append to post with Personal Experience and share their cure. One can only hope.........it could happen!

    Hi Everybody:
    Thanks for all the info. I removed several programs I installed recently and some I don't use much. Plus I ran another virus program that found a virus in one program but should not have affected IE. In effect my computer runs faster and better but no IE. But I did get the error message I didn't before.

    Error signature................
    AppName: iexplore. exe
    AppVer. 5.51.4807.2300
    ModName: alxie328.dll
    ModVer. 3.0.0.28
    Offset 00003ea2

    Any suggestions.
    Thanks
    Wedgee

    alxie328.dll is an Alexa file. Did you remove the listed Alexa components when you ran Ad-Aware?

    Hi Brent:

    I remember removing all of Gator entries. I may have inadvertantly removed the Alexis file.

    Some mess up with Alexa Toolbar is causing your problem. You probably have some registry garbage and at this point I don't know what your going to do to have to clean it up.

    I ran a check on the file alxie328.dll and didn't find much, there was a reference at the Bugtoaster site which indicated some 12 reported IE crashes with this as culprit although they didn't offer any usefull help on what this file is or how to clear up the problem.

    I was going to have you investigate this dll further but I found a Public news site that provided the info I needed. It was a confirmed Alexa file [Brrowser Helper File] connected with the Alexa Toolbar: [rather lengthy, but any ship in a storm will do]SEE...
    http://groups.google.com/groups?q=a...ow=1&selm=eCwjA1c8AHA.2020@tkmsftngp03&rnum=1

    Unfortunately, this post did not end with any sharing of the fix.

    As I see it, your probably going to have to go into the registry and manually cleanup this mess since the problem started with IE 6 and you have since uninstalled and problem still exist with IE5.
    Or turn the Ad-Aware program reins loose and let it do a thorough clean out. This may mean a reinstall of a program or two. Alternative is looking for a site reference to a manual clean out of the Browser helper junk from the registry.

    I don't know much about the Alexa Toolbar so I'll have to do some research on what your removal options are......

    I will return when I have found something usefull. In the meantime do you have an entry in your "add/remove software" cpl that has anything to do with this or any other Browser Helper Object that you may have installed. This may be gator, gozilla, ad popper stoppers, anything Kaza or morpheus, etc. Anything that has browser plug-in capability may be held suspect at this point but Alexa appears to have the current "Spot Light ". So we shall focus on this.

    *Note even though ad-aware removal offers to remove integration of many of these, they do admit that the best way is to check if you have a traditional default removal option of this in add/remove software wizard. After using this then run ad-aware and it will catch garbage that may have been left.:

    ======Back======
    Alexa offers t remove it for you:
    http://pages.alexa.com/exec/faqsidos/help/index.html?index=38

    ut-oh.......
    There is an IE sidebar that is made by Alexa but is part of IE by default. It is the button that ones uses for additional info:
    http://pages.alexa.com/exec/faqsidos/help/index.html?index=41

    This may indicate that Alexa may not be the culprit but a corrupted install or removal of IE has been done or again the registry has some garbage that needs cleaning up.

    Gotta' go look some more, I guess......
    By the way, F.Y.I.

    If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if Internet Explorer 5 is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, you may be able to start the Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt. To do so, click Start , click Run , and then in the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK :
    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt "

    ==================
    Maybe muddying the waters here but interestingly enough ad-aware also offers this little goodie as a companion to their regular software:
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/bho.html

    This, when ran will list your browser helpers and the registry info, offer to allow or disable browser integration. You just gotta' figure out who these buggers are and if you need them. Any search engine should help.
