Should those of us who use MSE (and indeed those of us who recommend and install MSE on client's machines) be concerned about the results of these tests?

Personally, I've installed MSE on dozens of machines and never had a problem except for one client that had a neighbour's daughter and her boyfriend accessing his computer and going to undesirable sites and getting his machine infected on a number of occasions but that's another story....

Hi Don. Its interesting to see the results but I would not be concerned. As long as you take a layered approach to security software then I wouldn't worry about it. I'v been using MSE since it was released and haven't had any issues with it especially since I don't rely on one program to protect my system.

Even if you install the best antimalware program, you can't stop a user for infecting the computer due to their own negligence. You can only lower the risk of a computer getting an infection and not fully stop it.

Hi Evan. I agree - after all, the best AntiVirus in the world is common sense!!

However, when we install AV on client's machines, we can't rely on them to take the precautions and the layered approach you and I will take. The amount of PCs that I go to with MSE that have the orange flag or sometimes even red flag lit is incredible - even after these flags having been explained to them in detail...

Maybe Broni will chip in and give his take on it - after all he's the expert :)

Well when it comes to clients machines as you probably know the best thing you can do is to educate the user on how to keep their computer secure and to practice safe browsing habits.

Failing that then yes the user would have to rely on the security program that we install to keep them safe. Now would installing Avast, AVG or some other security program make a big difference when it comes to stopping malware infections compared to MSE? Possibly, sure. Every security program is designed differently and some programs will catch infections that other programs will miss.

We will see if MSE failing the certification test from http://www.av-test.org/ will hurt its reputation. All I can hope for is that Microsoft will get its act together and the next time MSE gets tested that it will pass.
