I just installed McAfee, ran a check and came up with the Nimda virus infecting various script files under inetd and also one dll, it was the httpodbc.dll file. On cleansing I stupidly deleted the dll file. Now when I restart my machine, I get through some of the boot process but then it just hangs at some point before drawing the icons on the desktop. Another point to note is that the services appear to be loaded but not started.

I opened task manager and MSDTC is occupying 100% cpu and not getting anywhere. At a guess I think it's related to the deletion of this .dll file, however I had also run windows update before hand so when it restarted the first time it was actually rebooting to complete the installation of IE6.0 and Internet tools, the first of the critical updates.

Unfortunately now I can't do anything, because of the 100% occupancy, and I don't know how to kill the MSDTC process to free the processor. I tried booting into safe mode but it still didn't work. If I can get my files off the and re-install I'll be happy.

Can any experts suggest a fix or at least a method to get my word files. I have a second notebook but unforutnately it's win98 powered so I can't read the file system I usually just use it on the road and move files from it to win2k, not vice versa.

So much for me cleaning viruses!

    help appreciated.

    Rich.
