After installing a new WD hard drive I can no longer open msconfig. I suspected a virus but after running two different programs it is clean. I am using the new drive as the master and retained the old drive as a data drive. I am able to open regedit and other programs. It is only the msconfig. I am running an XP Home update. Anyone have an idea how I can correct this problem?

    I like "mailman "'s suggestion a lot.

But be aware that an issue with msconfig not resolved by a change to your Path statement or other pathing resolution, would make me immediately suspect malware.

For example, the ever popular Backdoor.SD32 series of trojans is now hotter than ever. Many of its variants will replace msconfig. If you find MSCONFIG in any directory other than under Help, or you find MSCONFIG.COM or similar variants, a good malware scan is strongly suggested. Do a windows search for msconfig.*

As for trusting your virus scanners, I just earlier removed a Backdoor.SD32 trojan that was only seen by Kaspersky and Panda, of 16 virus scanning engines I submitted the file. And in both cases they had only added an entry yesterday to their definition files.

    MSCONFIG will not open

I have run Kaspersky and Norton and while Kaspersky and I am virus free. I ran CC Cleaner, Adware and Spybot. I checked for the Msconfig in regedit and it is there. Yet it will not open. The cursor turns to the "hour glass" for a second then will go no further. It acts just like when a pop-up-blocker stops an ad. I am running XP Home update. My original OS was Millenium. However, I have never had a problem with msconfig until now. We added a new Western Digital hard drive and made the original 20gb drive a data drive. I have scanned it also and nothing suspect shows up. There has to be an answer, but I can't come up with it. Thanks everyone. I look forward to your suggestions.

How did you get the OS onto the new drive? It sounds like the cloning process failed in this area and possibly others. Consider doing a Repair Install. If you have no data to risk, do a clean install.

Never assume that a non-viral malware cannot cause equal or great issues than viruses. Your symptoms are still that of malware. If the file failed to open at all, I would be less certain that malware is at fault here.

    Test:

    Start, Run, cmd

    copy C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\msconfig.exe c:\test.exe

    c:\test.exe

    What happens?

If Msconfig opens and does not shut down, you have malware. It could be viral or otherwise. Remember that any decent piece of malware is going to disable your ability to run a AV scan that would identify it. It may prevent the scan from happening at all, or it just will render the scan ineffective.

In the case of non-viral malware, your AV scans are not even looking for issues.

    Hello Neskypilot,

To follow up on Bill's idea that this may be malware:

    Download and run HijackThis:

Download from here http://radiosplace.com/ latest version 1.99.1

Download it to it's own folder, for example create a folder C:\HijackThis

unzip (double click on zipped folder)

    click on the execute

click on Do a system scan and save a logfile and save to the folder you just created

copy resultant .txt file and paste into your next post

Also adding to your thread title for clarity.

    Regards - Charles

    Note that KAV was disabled:
    O23 - Service: Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 (AVP) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0\avp.exe" -r (file missing)

HJT is not definitive in terms of 023 entries, so the service may in fact be working correctly.

Do a Start, Run, services.msc and check that Kaspersky is still running.

These Two 09 entries almost always imply a malware infection:
    O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe (file missing)

I would be very surprised if after a thorough examination nothing was found just on the evidence of these two keys being in your log.

For example, this is a malware entry:

    O16 - DPF: {AED98630-0251-4E83-917D-43A23D66D507} (Download Helper Class) - http://activex.microgaming.com/DLHel...7/DLHelper.cab

You have several 016 entries that are very suspicious.

I would ask this thread to be moved to the Malware removal subforum. There are some things that you certainly need to do, and they can help you with them:

. we need HJT in its own Folder
. You need to clean old and install a new Java update

But more than just some housekeeping chores, it is rare to see Party Poker entries without finding on deeper looks Hotbar and other malwares active. And there are malwares that I suspect underlie your issue that "hide" from HJT and antivirus programs. Certainly with Party Poker entries in your logs a check for both Vundo and SmitFraud are likely needed, but let the good folks in malware removal pick up the job from here.

    Best regards,
    Bill

    Hello Neskypilot

Yes, please - an important point. The reason for that is, part of any cleaning involves clearing of temp folders.

You have it here: C:\DOCUME~1\Ray\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

Create a folder C:\HJT and run the HJT .exe from there.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Netskypilot.

As has been suggested, we need to move HJT to it's own folder to avoid deleting back ups which could be required to restore later on. While that is rare, it could prove troublesome if we don't have those.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It must not be installed on the desktop.

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Move HijackThis.exe into this folder (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe). When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

In so far as the log goes, I see one item as Bill pointed out, the ActiveX control needs to go.

And PartyPoker is not always an indication of trouble as it does come bundled with some adware apps. Some people occasionally actually say they use it and as long as the user has no continued complaints about unwanted symptoms, it can stay on a machine.

023 lines in HJT are not always actually 'missing'. I'll have to double check the reason for the bug. There is a similar bug with 09 entries as well, so we can ignore those entires. I do see KAV as a few running processes, so I'm fairly certain the files are there.

I'd like to ask if you had tried the solution posted by Bill to run that test? Did that work as Bill said it might? Please let us know. I doubt what is currently on the system has caused this problem, as it is rather 'lightweight' as malware goes.

We'll continue with the log now.

Access your Add or Remove Programs Control Panel by hitting your [Start] button, select Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs. Then find the following programs and click the [Change|Remove] button for each, if they are listed
    Party Poker

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Search for, and delete, if found, the following files/folders:
    C:\Program Files\PartyGaming<<<<---this folder

Reboot post a new HJT log back into this thread please.
